Guest TAMMY_1 Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 we use bliss for young birds and show birds as it seems to keep them cleaner and no disadvantages we know of but all old birds for racing are scraped out every day[Liz is doing a sterling job just now ]
Guest Blaydon Racer Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 I have all my lofts on a deep litter of wood pellets (cat litter ) --been in for two years now Benefits are that the loft is always bone dry --I just rake any excess droppings off the surface now and then and add a few more pellets The one negative is that when it is wet outside and you go in the loft it clings to the bottom of your shoes which can cause a bit of a mess

just ask me Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 done deep litter a couple of times decided not too this year
JohnQuinn Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 I'm using a different section for my Yb's this year, i don't put anything down to get it started so i scrape the droppings into a corner and turn them every day until they dry out then spread them evenly over the floor. So by the end of racing there should be a good inch or two of litter.
Fly_caster Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 I have 42 Darkness YB on deep litter ever since they were weaned. I started with a clean floor to which I added half a bag of Eazi-Bed wood chippings. The section size is approx. 11' deep x 8' wide, including a corridor and aviary to the front of the section. The birds own the corridor ! In fact, my entire lofts (60', 8 sections in total) are all on deep litter, even my Widowhood racing team. I also don't treat but I do vaccinate. My birds are as clean as a whistle, YB's are durable and you will spot the weaker ones early on, making it easy to deselect. My YB team is over 90 in number, and I've removed 3 to date, and don't expect to remove many more from sickness of any sort. Hope this helps, Steve
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 got beechwood chips on the floors of the young bird sections. Good for heat, keep dust down and just needs a rake over each day as you clean the perches
peter pandy Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 Have used straw as deep litter since the 70s. Advantages - The birds love to lie on it especially when the sun shines into the bedding, They pick and scrape it about eating dry droppings which are full of prebiotics, It creates warmth and helps dissapate moisture in the air and they have never encountered any disease due to what I believe is a stronger immunity build up. Disadvantage - Takes me a couple of hours to clear and change the straw after the moult once a year.
