greenlands Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 Don't know about the protein side of it mate but there's a Canadian Vet writes in the RP said peas were far better for the pigeons because of the toxins in the maple skins.I'm feeding Gem Irish at the mo. and the pigeons go for the three types of peas before anything else.

OLDYELLOW Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 Tic beans and maples both have toxins in the outer skin , peas such as green , blue and white are better protein for your birds as don't have the negative toxin in the skins , from feeding my own mixes I don't use tic beans the reason for this is when I was younger it was always the tic beans the birds left . I preferred maples after reading the article i tried increasing the green pea however I found if the ratio of green pea was greater than 50% they would start to leave the green peas , so I use 3 parts maples to 2 parts green peas , what works for my birds may differ for others birds. I'll bump the article further nutritional consideration for pigeons

Guest TAMMY_1 Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 Maples peas , white peas, blue peas, green peas. I was wondering if anyone tell what the difference in protine etc if any. On the old site there used to be a complete grain composition table you could download which I did and have, tried to access it again but will not allow me to, maybe if you ask fifer if he can get the downloads on this new site ?
Guest Owen Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 Tic beans and maple peas should not be more than 15% of the diet according to the Ministry of Ag. This is because of the tannins in the brown skins. However, providing that you make sure that the birds have access to kaolin which comes from clay and is found in the clay blocks made for pigeons you can safely feed more. A lot of people have the idea that we should feed high levels of protein both for distance racing and rearing youngsters but it is my opinion that this is greatly over stated. I think it is far more important to feed the correct mix of Omegas 3,6, and 9.
