Guest ljb107 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Hi Everyone I already have a wire mesh floored box aviary and it works well, I'm thinking of doing a wire mesh floor in the loft. What size wire and thickness do you recommend that will be able to be walked on with enough supports? I was thinking of 1x1 wire but not sure of thickness - wanting to keep the cost down as much as possible. Thanks Lloyd
homer jw Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 wher abouts r u i have wire floor in loft but during racing season i have to sheet it as u cant get form in loft because of to much changeable air
Guest ljb107 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 I'm near Falkirk in Scotland. It's going to be wire on a 2x2 wood frame on my t&q floor so nothing will change, just they can't walk on their droppings before i scrape it. They'll be lifted a couple of times a week to scrape under. Lloyd

just ask me Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 have been in about 6 lofts with wire floors or grids they are not for me would be ok in stock loft maybe in young bird section just would not fancy it all in my widowhood section often wonder about the corn that falls though the grids and mice or worse being underneath moving about cant see cocks resting at all also the air flow i never liked in them either im sure there top lofts out there with class results with grids or wire floors but just not for me
OLDYELLOW Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 My mate had walls all way round and fed in corridor on a wooden floor so no spillage so basically he had a pit to clean out and a air block in front wall of each section

OLDYELLOW Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Never thought about the need for one but now that I have one it's brilliantthe beauty of it is you can be amongst yer birds without disturbing them
Guest ljb107 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 So can anyone tell me what gauge wire you think will be strong enough to walk on? Like i've already said - its going to be 2 inches off the floor, so mice are out of the question. Plus they are going to be lifted every couple of days and cleaned, so food spillage isn't an issue - its just to stop the birds coming into contact with their mess. I do not race pigeons, i only have 1 racer. This will be for fancy and flying pigeons that need to be kept white, with no stains on their tails! Lloyd
ovy1255 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 lloyd --there is a few down in the n/east using mesh floor-----think its called expanded metal, and its galvinised----think ian stafford uses this stuff try giving him a bell.

Guest ljb107 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 sorry mate not sure had it given, thay should have it at builders yards think its used in concrete, Ok, no worries. Thanks for that. I have found some online, seems reasonably priced. I'm guessing that the wire that comes in sheets can be walked on as its too thick to roll up
joncro55 Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I put in a wire mesh flooring, and I will never GO BACK! It was a lot of work, but it is well worth it. Originally I thought about using Galvanized wire mesh material, but then I realized that stainless steel will probably be better (Lack of stains, rust). I used some 6 x 6 wire mesh, but I think anything between a 4 x 4 and a 8 x 8 wire mesh in stainless steel should work. I got samples free from http://www.bwire.com/ They helped me out a lot and gave me a really good price for some cut pieces of this material.
barnie Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 I used it for aviaries floor, had to watch out and keep underneath spotless as rats started to show up.This will give you guage sizes, i reckon 10 G or above as long as its on a decent wooden frame.http://www.dave-cushman.net/elect/wiregauge.html I've seen same idea using wooden slatted floor panels, looked tidy but not cheap.
