Guest geordiejen Posted July 15, 2012 Report Posted July 15, 2012 seems a bit harsh starving them to find out who has or doesnt have worms.best thing to do is to just worm them every 6 months or so.
frank-123 Posted July 15, 2012 Report Posted July 15, 2012 Many years ago I read of an International Barcelona winner's methods which was. In January I take everything out of the lofts that birds can eat or drink, Lock the loft up and dont go near for 7 days. After the 7 day period of abstinance re-enter the loft and dispose all the inmates which have lost much weight. If you have a decent team you will not dispose of many and for the record I have carried this programme out for 30 years starting the Monday before Blackpool and finishing the Monday after. What is your top 5 results in 30 years?
peter pandy Posted July 15, 2012 Report Posted July 15, 2012 Geez, you are asking me with alka seltzer my top 5 races in 30 years ?. Well I suppose timing in every race I have went to with the exception of last years y/b national when I sent 1 and did not get her till the following day and cheltenham national where I am still waiting for the 4 I sent must count for something. Can we bear in mind that my previous remark was regarding constitution of a birds ability to withstand hardship and therefore hopefully give confidence of the birds ability to the fancier.I practice this course of action due to sending very few birds to a race and I want to feel confident within myself that what I do send will be in confidence of its constitution.I do believe the best 5 results to my memory which to me were unforgetable would have to be sending 1 to win 2nd open 400 miles. sending 1 to be 3rd open 400 miles. sending 1 to be 13th national 670 miles. sending 1 to be 196th national 560 miles and sending 1 to be 43rd national 640 miles.I remember the international winner being Van-Eidjen and his video told all.

I've a good old article here by him called "Selection the Dutch way".Worth a read by anybody interested in building a team of good long distance birds He was a pig farmer was he not?
Guest Owen Posted July 15, 2012 Report Posted July 15, 2012 Use either Moxidectine or Cydectine. Treat the pigeons twice ten days apart because one treatment will not usually clear the hair worm. What ever you do "Do not starve your pigeons". Pigeons that have worms are being starved anyway because the worms rob them of nutriants which is what makes them loose wieght. And I know David Palmer used to tell people to use Eqvalan horse wormer but you will be far better off using products that are suitable for pigeons. Besides all that the two products I have mentioned will deal with air sac mite which is a useful bonus.

Guest IB Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 I would never starve a pigeon and IMO the thinking behind doing it doesn’t make sense. How can starving the bird test its constitution when starvation actually removes the very building blocks that make a good constitution– good health through proper nourishment, exercise and a good immune system. Starvation destroys the gut wall which provides both nourishment & immunity. So starvation doesn’t test the constitution, it destroys it. The gut wall isn’t smooth it’s lined with millions of tiny hair-like projections called villi. Search the internet using keywords intestinal villi + starvation. Skip the science jargon and skim the ‘plain english’ bits – these describe what happens to mice & humans after only 3 or 4 days without food - the gut wall starts breaking down and isn’t able to keep the bloodstream safe from the organisms that are 'normal' for the intestine. Although there are countless billions of these organisms in a normal healthy gut – the body remains perfectly safe from them so long as they stay where they are meant to be - in the gut – but if they get through the gut wall into the bloodstream these once-friendly organisms become just like any pathogen, and will cause disease throughout the bird’s body. A bit more on what these friendly organisms do for us:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15356016?oo=0
FoxesFan4Ever Posted August 19, 2012 Report Posted August 19, 2012 also does a lot of external parasites too Hi guys, I googled for these 2 products but nothing came up only a load of sheep related articles. Where can I buy them?, how much?, and how do i work out a pigeon size dose please? Thanks!!
