Tony C Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 How many chances? If I think a pigeon has got a little something about it regardless how its performed as a baby or yearling it'll get a chance as a 2 year old to prove itself.
jim cowie Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 almost all good birds i have raced across the channel had made a mistake earlier in their career.eg,red hen SU00AB2888 was lost for 8 days from Tow Law 166mls.went on to fly Falaise 580 mls on the day in 2004(13hrs13mins)73rd open snfc
fletch Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 if they showed some ability as a yb or yearling they get to 2 year olds then still nothing to write about then they goneif they show nothing as a yb and yearlng then thats them gone toif they good as yb but not god as a yearling they will get another year to prove there worth
Guest IB Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Don't think you can have any hard & fast rules as it must be different for sprint and distance racing - so the birds will be set different goals. The earliest a distance pigeon will usually face 500+ miles is as a 2 y-o. And even on that opinions differ, e.g. a slower maturing family might not be sent until they are 3 y-o.

Rooster J. Cogburn Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Was told by a top class 500 and 600 mile racer in my area to always keep an eye out for a yearling that comes later at night fi a club race. These are the ones that have made a mistake during the race but have had the sense and the will to get home to fix it. He tellt me many of his best channel doos were such yearlings.

Guest IB Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 Billt and JAM had 2 posts which touched on breeding. I think choosing breeders merits its own thread and I have split them from this topic to a thread called 'How do you choose your Breeders'.

What age do you give them to to score?? or how long do you let them be last to the loftimo if birds show nothing by y/b and yearlings time to sort them out from their but it depends what your looking for wouldnt keep anything to go in to 2 year old age if was no where near the clock their is so many people keep them just to fill boxes if get rid straight after last old bird race then their is no going back if have a heavy loss y/b season and if bird late more than 3 times as yb if weather is ok and birds still late it goodnight im affraid imo
