geordie1234 Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 Now that the doos are heavy into the moult do they get any loft flying
andy Burgess Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 out for a bath ,once a week weather permitting , but in a few weeks time will close the doors for the winter . ...... and sharpen the scraper up
Guest Owen Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 My birds have been to every race this year. Today one lot went to Saisbury and the other lot went to Eastbourne. I will close the loft tonight and leave them to rest and complete the moult. I reckon that loft exercise will delay the moult which is the last thing they need at this time of the year. Besides there is nothing to be gained by having them out flying about in bad weather. If I was worried by the risk of them putting on wieght I would include barley in their diet. My aim is to have them ready for next year's racing and to have them hanging about in the bad weather will certainly not help them do that.
OLDYELLOW Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 end of racing mine are locked up , no point in feeding bops around loft during winter , falling to bits , quite agree that flying birds moult slower
JohnQuinn Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 My lot are out every day and as you can see the doos are moulting very well

just ask me Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 seen the hen sparrowhawk one day right over the loft then the next night the cock had a look mine not been out since although my aviary comes in very handy at this time of year can get plenty bath's into them there a brilliant idea frank would not be without a aviary thinking of making the stock loft smaller and a bigger aviary on it
Guest Owen Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 The Welsh South Road Fed and National flew two races at the same time on Thursday last. There were a pair of Peregrines floating about high above my loft when the birds were due back. They are around here all the time these days. I would very much like to let my birds have a leisurely fly a couple of times a week weather permiting. If I took the risk and did that you can be sure that these evil gits will take my birds especially if the birds are impaired by the fact that they are moulting. So reluctantly I will have to keep them inside for their safety. I know that I will face problems next Spring when I will have to let them out but with a little luck other people will have their birds out at the same time and this ought to help to spread the risk of peregrine strikes over a lot more pigeons. I reckon that this is modern pigeon racing and there is not much we can do about it.
