geordie1234 Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 How many times per day does your youngbirds get out do you think its better having them in the sky for 2 hrs rather than 2x 1hr
just ask me Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 its not the length of time for me but when i see mine flying i like to see them working hard so its more the type of work there doing then the length there in the sky

billt Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 To be honest George good birds are born good birds, you wont spoil them, rubbish will always be rubbish, you'll never make them a good bird, we all think we have our little methods of tweeking them but at the end of the day the good ones will be sitting on their perches whatever method you try
geordie1234 Posted June 20, 2011 Author Report Posted June 20, 2011 yip JAM terrible habit think i spooked them a bit flagging them so im no doing it anymore Billt you make a very good point
blaz Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 my yb,s get out in morning with old birds .i somtimes shout them in about 3 or 4 for a feed .when all birds have had a feed birds can go out or stay in it is up to them.i then add more food to hoppers so as when birds come back in later their is food for them. yb,s and old birds are mixed .most yb,s find their own way to yb secsion on their own or just stay in the loft whare they hatched.i know it is not one of the systems like widowhood or round about it is the kinbebothard system . it works for me

Guest IB Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 I try to put them out twice per day, 6am & 6pm approx., but I don't leave them out, so if I'm going away to clocks or marking stations in the evening, they're held in. They're also at the stage that when I put them out, they climb high and disappear for 30/40 minutes, maybes coming back down after an hour. That's what I want and I hate it if they just birl about the chimneys IMO that's OK when they're just getting on the wing, but not 4 weeks before the 1st race. I never flag any of my birds. They also get to potter about the garden for a while before I call them in. When the feeders go down in their section, they're already full, so anybody not coming in sharp comes in to very little - usually the barley the others have left.

If you can split them between 2 sections and get the ones that are ranging away on their own, do it. Give 1st team 5/10 minutes to disappear from sight, then let the 2nd team out to do their 20/30 minutes. They should all be back around the same time. If the 1st team stop ranging for an hour, I think that's the time to start training them. When you start to train, bear in mind they've probably already covered 20/30 miles radius of your loft. I think the 2nd team will catch up very quickly. If they are natural youngsters they will probably also be the ones you rely on to see you through the longer YB races, as the 1st team may be falling apart in the moult by then. I also find YBs fly better on their own - no OBs. But time is limited for most, so at this time of year my YBs go out first, are given time to disappear, then OBs go out behind them.
Guest kslicker Posted July 4, 2011 Report Posted July 4, 2011 I'm a novice. This is my first year racing. My YBs don't seem too keen on flying for even half hour straight now. They're too interested in mating and covering their eggs. Is this normal? Also, they are not on darkness but were early bred. They seem to have enough food because they leave some barley behind at morning feed. I am considering flagging because I can't afford to bring them down the road a few times per week. Any advice greatly appreciated. Cheers

For racing you can let them together for half an hour before basketing for the race on Friday night, this should motivate Some of them to put in a good effort on a Saturday. Remember you are only educating them in preparation for old bird racing next year, there are few medals for winning with Yb's.
