wiley i got a visit from a friend o mine from ABERDEEN alex dickson he was telling me hasnt had a race yet and hes dropped 14 birds training so he stopped and sending them first race witton castle this week i think he said 170 miles your more likley to loose them training as you are racing

Hammered here training,as you say you might aswell go to the race point and take your chance.

Old birds/ youngens have to have as much as posible starting right from the day you put them through.

How important do you value basket training? What are the benefits?

I take it you mean y/birds, I think it is very important to get the youngsters used to finding the drinkers, that would be my main aim

basket training is a must, i think the main points being 1 getting to the drinker first, not just for a drink, but also it will have less bacteria in it, and there is less chance of there been none left, also the basket training, is to get them used to the confined space, and not get the birds to stressed before the race, you should have all the stress at your home end before they

go to a race.

For y/bs I think it's a must. When I wean my y/bs I put them in a basket then put it on a table outside the loft every day for 2 weeks with food and water troughs before they go into the y/b section.

I think its good to have them relaxed and used to the baskett laying down and resting , its stays with them for there life , nothing worse than seeing young birds go to the first races doing backward sommersaults in the baskett and trying to ram there way through the dowells all night . stressed out there boxes , imo all wrong :emoticon-0138-thinking:

yes yb,s need to be trained to drink in basket think it helps them drink in race basket.as for tranning my yb,s only get 2 or 3 tosses from 10 mile.

I knew a man named Albert Laws very good flier he used to basket his youngbirds up and put them in the garage for 7 days and nights to get them use to the basket feeding, drinking,

Unless I'm misreading this, I think the man means basket training and not training

you are correct, thanks for the replies, had a brief discussion with a top flyer who reckons he never does basket train his young birds, says they get used to the basket, and to drink from when he trains them, just wanted to find out other peoples thoughts.

Quite a good tip I was given to stop them going mental the first time you put them in a basket is to basket them when its dark and leave them in there all night.

I weaned the birds to a basket for a few days last year but theres loads of ways to do it.

Agree with STB though you want them as used to it as possible come the first race so they arnae flapping about like madmen

Used to basket train the youngsters to drink many years ago ,but in recent years never bothered and had every bit as good results so don't think it makes any difference i think if they have a brain they will find the water after all how did they find it when basket trained ?

also putting yb,s in a basket now for a while with a drinker on .all the flapping about and banging about the basket soon stops.then let out in to their own garden if they have picked up any bumps or bruises or injured in any way with the flapping and panicking you dont lose them
