Guest Reeco Jnr Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 Hi all just a question about the widowhood system, for years my old man has flown natural but this year he has finally decided to go on the widowhood system, having only a small team of birds (ten cocks) we have a feeding system off a local friend who does well at national level, what we are finding is that when the birds have there hour excercise they only fly for 15-20 mins spells and then they just fly off randomly clapping and banging as they do so, what i want to know is do we have to flag the birds or does it take a good few weeks for them to get into the new system? First race we where 2 minutes behind the winner in the club and second race we where 5 minutes behind the winner but all 10 cocks where home within 15 mins of our first bird also how much should they be having is it a ounce a day or should it be as much as they can eat?? Any help appreciated Reeco Jnr.
Michael J Burden Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 I had birds who flew very well on a babies milk spoon in the morning and again in the evening. I did add more say Thursday but they ate very little extra. I never had them out on Friday and removed their food early say 11am with a 1pm liberation. I never flagged them at that time because they flew and flew some about 1 and a half hours twice daily!!! You can flag them but you can take too much out of them by doing that too much. Hope this helps.
Henrik Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 I,m giving mine 1 1/2 oz per day half morning half evening. They seem to dissapear for about 20-25 mins and then just play around for the rest of the time they are out. Dont really know if this is right or wrong but I,ll learn as I go along. Maybe some of the widowhood specialists could comment.

Guest big slim Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 We have flown widowhood for about 20 years. When our cocks are on song they will disappear for 15 to 20 minutes then drop onto the house roof. They will not sit long as they will clap about showing off. I prefer them doing this to flying round in circles for an hour. Ours get a soup spoon in the morning and 2 at night. Thursday night as many spoonfulls as they will eat, and friday morning as much as they want till lunch time. We start off the week with a light mix, and make it stronger from wednesday.

Guest redlad24 Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 what big slim is saying is right, mine could fly over the countryside for 25-30 mins then some would land others keep flying, but after a min or two they all would be clapping around going off on there own, i give them as much as they want on the sat and sun after the race then 1 1/4 oz a day roughly
