Could anyone tell me what month a young bird is bred in that makes it a late bred. I have some bred mid march with some still awaiting to hatch. what is the latest they can be bred and still be ok for this years yb season. when does the yb season start.

I would say if they are hatched in may they would be classed as late ,i have only started to ring youngsters as our first race is mid July but we have four races under 100mls so this gives them an extra four weeks if required ,never be scared to jump them 100mls if they are in top health as it is no probs to them ,I entered three 3yo hens in our first race last week this was ther first ever race ,they were never in a basket until they were 2yo and then they only had six training tosses out to 30 mls this season they had two trainers at 7mls and one at 18mls ,the first i clocked 5 seconds after my first bird taking 6th club with the other two very close behind so i suppose that blows the theory that they must be trained or raced when young .omo

i always like to get them rung for the 1st of june and quite a lot of the time they make the best y/b racers for me when they are rung around this time and i usually have them at the 1st race easy enough at 9 10 weeks old as they are up and flying quickly with the batch :egyptian: In fact i would have been 2nd club with a y/b last year that had only hawf grown it's 2nd flight(not a darky just a wee thing she was) but i sent it as a trainer as i had only transfered it the day before but a fortnight later at our duplication race it was 7th section after sitting oot for nearly 5 mins as an older cock y/b returned from the week befores race just before she landed and chased her all over the loft roof :emoticon-0179-headbang::emoticon-0179-headbang:

Do you think they would be better leavin them until they are 2yr olds wae training as yearlins( first year)

My second yin at Ypres was also a late breed Alan and I think John Quinns was as well. Just think at 2yr old they have a bit more maturity and less erratic?

You'd have to say it depends on the individual doo.Not every latebred could be sent across the water as a yearling and do well but if you give it a bit of patience they could be the best birds you'll own.

One of the best fliers ever in my section told me to breed pigeons in June.1) you take them off your best doos 2) they're bred when your doos should be in the best condition they'll be in all year.So they should get off to the best possible start

Funnily enough we were talking about latebreds down club today. This year will be my last working with them . I've taken various advice on working them and have lost every one I've ever bred. So won't breed any more.

I think a youngster of mine hatched during May would be more '2nd round' than a late bred - which hatches too late to catch any of the YB racing that takes place July / August.

Have you held them until 2yr old?

Yes, and lost them under 200 miles.

Have 3 x 2 yo on road for 1st time this year + 4 yearlings, 2 cocks started, 2 hens start next week.
