Rooster J. Cogburn Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 Thanks guys its a stall trall I have with a wee hatch to let them out under it when do you guys normally let them all out No rules as such here. They've got a wee cage attached to the hut so they've went out there through their own choice since perching age.The bowls always open along with old birds so again they went out there when they chose to.
billt Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 my yound birds are eating and doing great! they have been away from the parents for about 5 days now so a want to get them walking about the loft the only problem is the cant fly up the the trap door i let them out any ideas? i see a lot of guys on the forum want the ybs out afte 3 days of weaning how is this possible if they cant flyNo panic George, if they're not mature enough to fly up to the hatch to get out they're not mature enough to get back in, just follow nature, when youngsters can fly they will, I always have a viewing bay on my young-bird section so they can have a good look at the outside and I have never lost a youngster off the loft.

Guest Owen Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 I take the widowhood hens and youngsters away when the youngsters are 14 days old. I put the youngsters on a bed of straw where they keep each other warm and a clay nest pan containing food is placed on the floor. The hens will feed any youngster whether it is her own or not. If you check them in the evening you will find that they will all have full crops. This is much better than leaving them in the box because the old birds will be more interested in mating than feeding young. I like to watch the youngest learning to feed from the older youngsters which makes them indepenent real quick. In the stock loft I place a clay nest pan on the floor with food in it and the youngster are taken from the nest at 14 days and placed on the floor. Any and all of the adults will feed the youngsters and as before the youngsters will eat much earlier than if they are left in the boxes. I have never found that the youngsters get attacked or injured by the old birds and I never hear them begging for food because they are always full. When the hens are ready to lay they can use the original nest pan and do not have to compete with the youngsters for space.

Guest Dorset-lad Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 George when i use to race years back with young birds i use to go and sit in the loft on a stool and a small clear bag of budgie seed and every now and then i use to sprinkle a little around my feet they soon got use to me and they would climb all over me best young bird season i ever had. that way you proberbly be able to just walk in baskit on the floor bit of seed and no chasing. it worked for me.
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 When is it okay to feed titbits and whats the best to feed them something that will get them eating out my hand They go mental for hemp. You can get wild doos eating it out your hand in two or three days once they have a taste for it. Need to be careful with titbits and youngsters though if you want them to stay in good feather.Too much of a good thing can be bad.
