Was reading an article by Dave Allan years ago.He said if you give your pigeons garlic [i think he meant lots]on the run up to the hens laying you would get plenty infertile eggs.Has anybody got any experience of this?

I had to think a bit on this one before I realised that I don't give the birds garlic (or anything else) on the run up to and during the breeding season. I mostly use it during the racing season. My strongest solution is 1 bulb (approx 20g) crushed into a 2 litre drinker, and my usual is half that, 10g to 2 litre.

And I can't think how garlic might lower fertility - folklore has it doing very opposite..

As I have posted many times I use it in the bath water, keeps birds clean, and clears the nostrils

What method do you use to put it in the bath water?

I crush 6 cloves into a 2pt bottle let it lie for a few days, this is put into the bath, keeps lice etc from the birds, I have also put some in a spray bottle and spray the loft , you see all the moths etc coming out the cracks, it's also a good spray for keeping green fly from plants, that's where I first got the idea, from a gardening book,

think it the most over rated stuff about there aint any scientific proof to what its capabilities is in pigeon racing its all down to each fanciers beliefs, sure it makes the down fall but if the pigeons are in good condition then down will of them natural also supposed to have a lot of other benefits, then why oh why does ybs occur every year if its that good then pigeon fanciers would not want to treat for this and that :001:

as you say sammy each to their own,we have used garlic in all shapes and forms(powders, oils and probably the best crushed bulbs) since the early 80s and imo is up there as one of the best natural products we can give our pigeons. ;) ;)

As you know, I've been following articles on garlic for years, and it appears to me that it's the opposite of what you think, it's been long recognised that garlic was under-rated in animal health circles , the main reason for that seems to be because if fed to food animals, it would taste the meat. Not everyone likes the taste of garlic chicken.

The person mentioned on the website, Eric Block, has written a paperback book, Garlic and Other Alliums, The Lore and the Science, ISBN 9781849731805. Apart from one or two Chapters that can be skipped if like most pigeon folk myself included chemical equations & symbols are meaningless to you, most of it is written in straightforward English, and all the scientific proof of garlic's properties is there.
