It's Christmas time, and as traditional as the turkey and mince pies is the annual trip to Alexandra Palace to see darts' finest compete in the sport's blue riband event - the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

I have a flutter on Adrian Lewis E/W at 25-1.. Masssive price for a very good player. Phil is still very likely to win it tho but 4/7 is really bad odds... 5/4 Phil not to win is a nice wee bet too

power all the way but think taylor will win but james wade could be the danger he has a tricky first round against alcinas but if he gets through that he will go all way to the semi final as he is in a easy quater

The 50-year-old, looking for his 16th world crown, struggled for any fluency and betrayed the frailties that have seen him lose six matches in the past six weeks.

Lewis looking good

Adrian Lewis eased into the third round with a convincing 4-1 victory over Mark Dudbridge.

Lewis was highly impressive in the early stages and followed a check-out of 111 with a 12-dart leg to move 2-0 up inside 15 minutes.

With Lewis firing 180s seemingly at will, that quickly became 3-0 as Dudbridge struggled to make any impact on his opponent.

But, having broken in the first leg of the fourth set, Lewis then appeared to lose concentration as Dudbridge reeled off three legs on the trot to reduce the deficit.

Lewis found himself behind the fourth as he struggled to rediscover his early rhythm, but did enough to draw level at 2-2 and then pinched the decider to close out victory with double-top after Dudbridge had missed darts at double-19 and double-8 to extend the match.

Lewis, who now plays Robert Thornton in the next round, admitted he had rather lost his way after a his fast start, telling Sky Sports: "That should have been 4-0. But I let him get a set back and if he'd won that last one I'd have been in big trouble."

However, he insists he is confident of progressing further, adding: "If I turn up there and my head's fully concentrated I could beat Robert quite convincingly, but if I play like that it could be a close game."

Australian Whitlock finally gave his compatriots something to cheer in the sporting world with a fantastic display in Tuesday night's second-round action at Alexandra Palace.

However James Wade was not so fortunate in the final match, going down to a shock 4-2 loss at the hands of Austrian Mensur Suljovic.

The world number two, seen as one of a handful of players capable of challenging Phil Taylor, was well below-par as he suffered an early exit.
