HOMER49 Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morningWe will remember them
HOMER49 Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 Why do we wear a poppy ?In 1918 Moira Michael an Americanwrote a poem and promised to weara poppy each year to commemorate the fallenThis is the poem WE SHALL KEEP THE FAITHOh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,Sleep sweet - to rise anew!We caught the torch you threwAnd holding high, we keep the FaithWith All who died. We cherish, too, the poppy redThat grows on fields where valor led;It seems to signal to the skiesThat blood of heroes never dies,But lends a luster to the redOf the flower that blooms above the deadIn Flanders Fields. And now the Torch and Poppy RedWe wear in honor of our dead.Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wroughtIn Flanders Fields.

What about you?
HOMER49 Posted November 10, 2011 Report Posted November 10, 2011 In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields The above was penned by Major John McCraein 1915A very moving poem, part of the lastverse is talking directly to youTo you from failing hands we throw the torchbe yours to hold it highIf you break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep
glenrandal Posted November 10, 2011 Report Posted November 10, 2011 so many gave so much we will remember them

OLDYELLOW Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 This day, November 11th has come to be known as Veteran's Day, but it's reason for existence was to commemorate the end of World War 1 - the "War To End All Wars" when an armistice was signed on November 11th 1918 and the bloodiest, most inhuman (and pointless) war up to that point was finally over.On that occasion, former First Lord Of The Admiralty the Right Honorable Winston Churchill recorded a short address to acknowledge the war just ended. "We have won the great war, let us win the great peace." We will never forget those brave men and boys that have fallen in all wars , and gave there lives so ours would be better .
OLDYELLOW Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 On a cold November Sunday morn, an old man sits a whileLooking though old photographs, he can’t help but smileThey’re all there, all the boys, with hair cut short and neatUniforms of khaki, strong black boots upon their feet. They met as strangers but soon became like brothers to the endSmiling at the camera, there could be no truer friends. They all took the Queen’s shilling, went off to fight the hun,Soon learnt the pain of loss once the fighting had begun. So many never made it home, lost on foreign shoresMany more were injured and would be the same no more. The old man’s eyes mist with tears as he remembers every faceEach of his fallen brothers and the killing which took placeHe proudly dons his beret, his blazer and his tieFor today he will remember the ones who fell and died.On his chest there is a poppy, a blaze of scarlet on the blueHe steps out into the cold, he has a duty he must doOnce at the cenotaph he stands amongst the ranksOf those who marched to war and those who manned the tanks,He bows his head in reverence, as the last post begins to playAnd he wonders what will happen at the ending of his daysWill anyone remember? Will anybody care?About the lads so far from home whose life was ended there?I wish that I could tell him, that he should fear notFor this soldier and his brothers will NEVER be forgotWe owe a debt of gratitude that we can never payAnd this country WILL remember them, on each Remembrance day.
