airdrie2 Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 WILL LANARKSHIRE BE RACING FROM CONSETT NEXT YEAR ?
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 WILL LANARKSHIRE BE RACING FROM CONSETT NEXT YEAR ? More chance of Airdrie Utd winning promotion to the 1st division this year, lol Seriously though I doubt it very much because whether its just a coincidence that we have had 2 bad young bird races or whether there is a serious problem with pigeons orientating from there then either way we really cant afford to risk young birds being liberated there again so new race point will be on the cards which is a shame as reports from many are that Consett is one of the best lib sites that we use.

Reports from the controllers contradict this Gareth, the area is surrounded by valley's and the birds are easily driven into them and then can't get out again. I have heard this personally and have no reason to doubt the information.
frank-123 Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 since i was away on holiday my young birds only made two races this year and i picked consett twice i was told the same john about the valleys the boy said to me if they get in they valleys from training they end up in carlisle next year hexham will do me no further

dal2 Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 Solway fed have much the same issue wae Sedburgh. Its pinned in the hills and erevry local ive spoke to, when pickin up my hawked younguns, say they canny believe we race frae there. I think we have tae jump the cumbrian hills completely even if it means a slightly bigger jump in mileage than usual. For me its a no brainer. If you gan tae a race point say three or four times and get three or four disasters then its time to move on.

Guest IB Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 when i helped shu loft at kirknewton they jumped the birds from otterburn 70mls 2 thirsk 147 birds and droped only 3, food for thought ? A few years back Scottish North West Fed race management reckoned there was 'a black hole' which pigeons seemed to come through OK [i.e. OK liberating either side of it] but the pigeons seemed to have bother getting their bearings if liberated within it. So in 2007 they tried the same, 4 short races to Otterburn 82 miles, then jumped to Ripon 157 miles. I dropped 1 from Ripon.

Guest Gareth Rankin Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 think we should maybe stay away from the tyne area Would tend to agree with you John as year after year Lanarkshire have failed to get successful young bird racing from this area though that said we got a good race from Sedgefield 2 weeks ago but this might have been down to favourable winds.

Guest bigda Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 have 4 races this side of the border then start at 250 first for a all bird race come yearling open then its down to the birds 25-50 mile increase and if there are problems at the solway all your eggs are not in the one basket when they hit there

JohnQuinn Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 What i would say is that if you have proposals for the AGM's of your Fed, make sure you do everything you can to get information about the race points viability and some info from organisations who have used the site regards the type of racing they got from it.My persdonal choice of route would be to run in an arc from Otterburn to Dorchester/Weymouth going through, Thirsk, Leeds, Nottingham, Leicester, Oxford and Salisbury. Not that i believe the racing would be easier but there is every chance, with the prevailing westerly winds, the doos will be over land most/all of their way home. JMO

JohnQuinn Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 To my knowledge Frank this has only happened on 1 or 2 previous occasions, the thinking behind it i couldn't tell you but i agree with you that there should be a proposal from the M/C at the meeting. I will put it to George when i see him and maybe a week or so before the Race Program AGM we could have a delegates meeting to discuss it.I would welcome input to that from Jim Lennon and Jim Hannah who are probably the most informed men in our organisation. Again JMO!
