john cumming Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 how old can a racing pigeon be expected to race and compete at the top level??? i raced a 6 year old hen to 500 miles this year ( hastings ) had a nine year old arie visser cock that won from northallerton 240 miles a few years back whats your take on this folks???
Wiley Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 Vic Shaw of harlow raced a pigeon called Tom Thumb very successfully, short and long if i remember rightly, last time i read the pigeon to score was at 8 years old, My opinion, i dont like to race the good ones after 5 years, especially if they are breeding also. If they never bred owt i could be tempted to keep them on the road
Guest youngboy Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 i once read on a gazzette 1994 i think and there were two jannsen bred pigeons and brothers two and they raced up till they were 9 years old
DJWa Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 not 100% sure but i think there was a 9 year old hen that won a national in england
just ask me Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 wasn't there a old hen lost in Scotland this year that had thrown up fantastic performances over the last few year

Wiley Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 think brian denny won his section the other week with a 7 year old
Guest stb- Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 smiths macmerry timed a 9 yr old in the nfc saintes race this year
just ask me Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 seems to be at the longer distances that the older birds are achieving top class results
JohnQuinn Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 The old hen referred to earlier was named Fortune Lady, a Ch Wf who is the only pigeon EVER to win a double Gold award in the SNFC, i believe she was 10yrs old when winning her 10th diploma.I'm thinking it belonged to a Mr Jim Smith for some reason, i couldn't argue about it though as i'm no sure
frank-123 Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 think stb timed an eight year old to win his section from eastbourne this year am i correct?
Guest stb- Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 think stb timed an eight year old to win his section from eastbourne this year am i correct?yes your correct frank 8 yr old
Wiley Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 seems to be at the longer distances that the older birds are achieving top class results longer distance birds seem to take alot longer to mature, i dont think long distance birds come into there prime untill there 3 year old, while sprinters are quick maturing birds and many sprint men if they dont win or score well by there 2 year old out them, compared to that of the distance man.
Guest mick bowler Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 I think its just experience, the older the bird the more experience it has of racing and homing.

Bobby Carruthers from Bonnyrigg won SNFC Sartilly with a 9y old Hen as well.
