the clashing would probably contribute to that ie numbers altho numbers 30-40 years ago were probably more. Maybe overcrowding and unhappy/unhealthy birds would be a reason too?

BOP definitely also cause the disruption of batches when hit and account not just for the birds they strike but also the others in the batch.

I don't think there is any one reason for losses, I've voted for weather because the rain in NE England appears to have been the main reason for the bigger losses into Scotland on Saturday 7 August. Birds downed by the rain would have been sitting targets for sparrowhawks and when the rain did clear and the birds got up and on their way again, the peregrines would have got up too to start hunting again.

everyone of the above is a factor in the early races. whereas lack of training is'nt so much a factor in the longer races.

I think there is something else afoot if fanciers are losing large nos of well trained birds from distances of 46 miles then I personally think something is affecting the homing ability of the pigeon. What is the biggest single factor that has become the rage in the last 10 to 15 years? I will leave it open to your own interpretations and look forward to your answers.

personally i think its got a lot to do with all the electro magnetic fields and signals from telephone masts as they are everywhere now and the use of telephones and wireless internet etc is on increase and has in my mind co incided with the increasing losses also birds of prey are an issue but cant be responsible for such high numbers missing from races

modern technology......one of the major cause and responsible for high numbers of missing birds

Would agree that the homing ability is being interfered with by ??????? time for the Xfiles agent Scully to help us out on this one.

One other major problem not on the list above is Illness, YBS and respertory problems are the main ones and this is a major factor for losses when the pigeons are stressed which comes from weather and BOP attacks, as orientation is gone.

gareth,

i am still 19 down from 42 mate, do not think illness was a problem, all birds well look after or would not be in te race basket, think this time controller got it wrong, on here on sat morning someone warn us that 7 eng feds were sitting between kelso and otterburn, now i know we had about 7000 birds that day, but we clash, plus weather in dunbar and eyemouth was realy bad that morning after 10 oclock also,

There are plenty of weather sites Bill that you can look back and see what rainfall was like at a certain time in the day, on Saturday i did this and on the flight path that the pigeons should have taken to Lanarkshire from Consett there was no issue of rain, a lib a few hours later then the pigeons may have had a problem with rain. Glasgow Fed liberated from Dunbar at 8.05am and had a good race with better returns than previous races (most people still in bed - mobile phones on silent or off) :D:D:D

For whatever reason Lanarkshire pigeons headed over to this area via Carlisle as i had contact with a friend in Gretna who has informed me that 6 Lanarkshire doos will be liberated tomorrow in Hamilton that were collected from fanciers in Carlisle, most of the pigeons on Saturday came striaght from the south from the Solway direction.

If thats the case Gareth I can assure you that it was pissin doon mate. Real heavy downpours. Have heard of heavy showers right down to Tebay which is direct line of flight.

I think you could say all of them, as well as unhealthy birds and those just not upto it. Some birds couldnt fly from the end of the garden let alone 100's of miles. While there will always be those that are capable, the bad ones will drag down the good ones, not clearing the lib points etc.
