REDCHEQHEN Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 I ask this question as some breed early and some later - but how late to breed your youngsters for racing? Today I topped the fed with a youngster that chipped out on April 30th (it was 3 months old yesterday) and my 4th bird home chipped out on May 7th I've never had young birds this young before - they haven't been on the dark (well only for 2 or 3 weeks) and have already dropped atleast 2 flights So how old are your young birds?

THE FIFER Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 what I have noticed I ring my birds with first born lowest ring number, and I list my rings and birds when training, and notice its mostly the later ring numbers missing while training, I pair up after blackpool,so mostly second round young going down,
sapper756 Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 12weeks and older, I also like to see the colour in the eyes fully formed. JMOhttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif
Roland Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Like many other Old timers, I don't normally put the birds together till Last week March, first week April and quite easily race the second rounders. Eggs in late June flew Thurso 469 miles in Septmber. - Midland North Road N. 1987/9.
Guest IB Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 I paired up 2nd week in March last year. I reckon thats too late and tried to race youngsters that were too young, and lost the lot. This year I paired up last week in February, my 1st round hatched between 28th March & 1st April; started training on 19 June @ 12 weeks old @ 10 miles, and started racing on 25 July @ 17 weeks old, @ 63 miles. My 2nd round hatched between 28th April & 17th May, well spread out, so I decided not to even try and get them ready for YB racing, I think they'll start training within the next week or so.
Guest youngboy Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 5 months some are 4 months and 2/3 weeks
Guest gladdo Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Mine ARE LATER YOUNG AND I SENT 27 YOUNGBIRDS THAT ARE NOT ON DARK TO MALLOW YESTERDAY AND I GOT THEM ALL 27 BACK. However they did not compete but they trained twice a week and obviously they are not on the darkness system. Only one oerson to blame and thats myself but i see where i went wrong and thats most important . Im destined it wont happen again thats for sure. Early bred young are the best but if the younger ones are trained up well . I actually sent 49 young to first race with only 2 training tosses 79 miles and i got 42 but due to moult i stopped some .... THE MAIN THING IS THAT YOU ENJOY IT I SAY BUT I LIKE TO WIN ASWELL , IT HELPS HEY !!!! Mikey (dublin, Ireland)
budgie Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Give them a chance and at 3 yr old the 2% will be there.
