Over the last 24 hrs we have been approached by 2 fanciers/studs in Ireland regarding being interested in buying "Flow".

Now, everything in this world im sure for some has a price. "Flow" will never be raced again, and alot of ideas have crossed our mind as regards what to do with him in the coming time. Some suggested we build him a little loft and an avairy and let him see out his time in the garden, others say, do a deal where you get a decent price for the Kings cup winner, and also say you want 2 young birds per yr off him for as long as he is breeding, this way keeping his blood in our loft.

We dont live in the best of areas, and have already been told by just about anybody that lives in the area ot make sure the loft is well secured. To be honest, i havent slept great the last few days, checking the loft at all hours of the morning.

If anyone has any thoughts on the matter, please either pm me, or add them here.

Many thanks

Keep him and build your loft around him and bull him with many hens , sell the acorns not the oak ;) but i agree make sure your security is upgraded :) and if finished racing breed a few latebreds out of him :)

Well, anyone coming into the garden gonna have to pass the mad wife dog.. But, as iv said it isnt the best area around. I had a chat with another kings cup winner from N ireland, and he has offered me a hen off of his winner, plus says to go out and spend a few hundred quid and buy 3 or 4 more hens of kings cup winners and breed off him in a big way..

just tell them if they want something from him sell the young do not sell the champion you would make alot more selling young cuz i guarentee you all the other people want is to breed and sell the young this sport unfortunaely is alot about money these days i know it shouldnt be but thats all the studs are after pal i wud keep the bird in the house if it was that precious pal no chance of anyone getting it but your right to step up security even get cctv outside you wud feel much sfaer with a prize bird like that pal well done on winning mate phil

Why sell? You have won the most prestigous race in the Irish Pigeon Calender. How many lofts in Ireland can say they hava a Kings Cup winner? It takes years of trying and many many top fanciers fail but you have succeeded. Listen to Mark (oldyellow) sell the Ybs and keep the cock. I would however get loft secured or have him housed somewhere else where no-one knows.

Mmmmm......many questions and scenarios arise from your Kings' Cup win !!!

I think Eamon (Shortcut Lofts) raises a very valid point as to why sell him at all ? OK security may be a problem, so maybe enquiries should be made to see if there is the possibility he could be 're-housed' somewhere else strictly on the quiet. This of course would involve a great deal of trust between you and the other fancier concerned. As Eamon says, to win the Kings Cup is what most Irish fanciers only dream of. I wonder have you taken into consideration the guy who bred the pigeon ? Would it be a possibility to 'gift' it back to him, and come to some agreement whereby he could breed you a couple of pairs of youngsters off him each year. He already has the bloodline of the cock, and so this should be concentrated on, and who knows, maybe he could breed you another one !!! OMO.

I dont want to take anything away from your birds acheivement racing wise but breeding from him is something differant,as he bred anything good up until now, this is what I would be asking myself, there are many champion racers that never breed anything like themselves so to fill your loft with pigeons that maybe only mediocre is something I would seriously think about.JMO.

Just to clear a few things up.

We have spoken to the person that Bred him, and he has been offered some birds as a thank you. He seems like a nice man, thou it took us a full day to get his phone number.

As for the GIFT idea, not a hope. Sorry for being blunt, but that is just how it is.

I think there's plenty to be considered in this post. Mayb ask the breeder about the family that your worthy winner comes from. Is there plenty of examples of winners close to him or is he an exceptional sport in a line that hasn't done much to note. If he's from a family of performers then i'd guard him with my life and never sell him. If he was from a family of birds that have not consistantly performed over a number of years then i would sell him without hesitation and use the money to invest in a round of youngsters from a family of tried and tested birds that have consistantly performed at the distance you want to aim at. I would imagine he'd be worth enough to do this for at least 2 seasons whereafter you would have a full loft of quality blood. Speculate to accumulate if it were me but at the end of the day you must make your own mind up. By the way, many congratulations on winning what we're all dreaming about and good luck for the future.

What way is he bred mate??

i would sell it mate and get young birds back each year, then you dont have the worry of it going missing or anything else that might happen to it health wise.

myles told us last night (no pedigree or names mentioned) he bred it and it was 1 of his gold ring birds as a youngster (so obviously thinks alot of the parents)

A bird the same way bred i believe won this yrs tough Penzance race for Myles.

We hope to go up to visit him in a few weeks and drop off a present. Will get more info then m8 and let you know.

Spot on but might (intentionally) get out, (nudge nudge wink wink) and who is to say the youngsters you recieve are his and from what hen etc. etc. If you feel he is worth breeding from then stay in control and keep him. What is his past performances like etc. etc. Anyway, well done, and good luck on whatever you decide.

Between club/fed/national it looks like somewhere in the region of £4,000. WHich is lovely, it shall go towards our trip to wales and scotland in the off season to purchase some distance birds.
