REDCHEQHEN Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 We've had a lousy old bird season - great last year - most were the same birds this year and they're just getting further and further behind Had them to the vet on Monday and there's nothing wrong with them (only my bank balance now ) Before taking them to the vet - somebody did pass comment and said - 'there's nothing wrong with them - it's motivation' so maybe it is - but how can I motivate them even more - we fly one section roundabout and another natural
sapper756 Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 I use to fly roundabout, racing both cocks and hens, however I found out that the more a bird hurries home to the loft to find it,s mate has not arrived yet, the bird becomes wise to this, and its eagerness to get home quick deteriorates, so I decided to fly cocks only on the widowhood, and their mate is always ready and waiting for them, worth considering http://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif

Tony C Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 I think the weather has a lot to answer for. Persistent cold north easterly winds twinned with chilly nights doesn't allow form to come easily. A few weeks back I decided to lock my pigeons up for a week because I wasn't happy with them or their condition. 1st fed the following week 2nd fed two weeks later.......... its not always a health problem.
REDCHEQHEN Posted June 17, 2010 Author Report Posted June 17, 2010 What did the vet test for? I took 6 birds with me and droppings from each section all birds were swabbed throat and cloaca, and droppings cultured no canker, no yeast, no salmonella, no worm eggs, cocci count 100, 300 & 2200 from the 3 samples We won Clermont last year in a NE wind (1st & 2nd) and although the race was a disaster this year - we were nowhere sapper - although we race roundabout our best hens are paired to non-racing cocks - so they're always there for the hens The birds are having a rest this week

OLDYELLOW Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 their routine HAS changed this year also some of the hens had started pairing - but they're being boxed up and they don't like it ! no chance too much worklol just paired mine back up be split again soon
Guest rodders Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 their routine HAS changed this year also some of the hens had started pairing - but they're being boxed up and they don't like it ! Posted Today, 19:50 PM pair them up no chance too much work we race roundabout noticed hens were less willing to fly on exercise bearing in mind havnt been out first 4 in club except 1 race when was 5th so we paired them back up and took 2nd 4th 5th chasing to nest this week on eggs and looking very keen but saturday will tell if we was right or wrong only 3 inland races left and i think ours had clicked to system and was going stale
Guest spin cycle Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 had exactly the same experience. i had a good 2008, then 2009 was just about saved by a good result in the last ob race...then 2010 and my results were looking the same as 2009 up until 30th april when i was last. i was pretty sure my birds were fit & healthy....so i sat down and pondered why wiining birds from 2008 had turned into also rans. the first thing i decided was to try to recreate my loft set up from 2008. this was difficult because both the loft and nestboxes were different...but i had to start somewhere so i gave it a go. needless to say it worked and i'm very happy with my season now. you have to start somewhere...if only to prevent next year being the same and i think oldyellow is right...pair them up and just fly one system. good luck to you
REDCHEQHEN Posted June 17, 2010 Author Report Posted June 17, 2010 We have paired them up before for the last races - and it just didn't work
DAVIDL Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 you said yourself, the hens are pairing up to each other..........so they arnt going to be as keen with the cock they are paired to maybe ? also was reading article today and the fancier said sometimes over use of the hen when racing widowhood is not good, something worth thinking about maybe ?
Guest spin cycle Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 We have paired them up before for the last races - and it just didn't work perhaps they've lost there 'love of home'...how about putting both sections on natural...straw on the floor and open hole for a week...following week train to race fitness and send

Guest mick bowler Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 You dont mention test for resp? Also i thought it took more than 3 days for culture tests? Mind you sounds like hens dont like being penned, mine were the same, first year i did it, couldnt race for nothing. I would always pair mine up for the longer races, and although they came well on RB they would excel on eggs/YBs. Its important to keep their sharpness, exercise seperatly except sunday, make sure they also exercise well, if not then train them, and you can also seperate them when sitting so they just see each other on changeover.
