Tony C Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 Newcastle Disease 12/10/2006 The State Veterinary Service is investigating a suspect case of Newcastle Disease in East Lothian. There is no suspicion of avian influenza, also known as bird flu. Newcastle Disease is a disease of poultry and does not have any significant public health implications. The premises concerned have been placed under restrictions whilst veterinary inquiries are undertaken. Samples have been sent for analysis to the EU reference laboratory at VLA Weybridge. Results are expected at the weekend. Wonder how many cases were investigated last year whilst we had our eyes fixed on bird flu.

Guest Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 I think reaction will depend on what strain of Newcastle disease it is.

Jeremy Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 I am sure its nothing to worry about my friend works at defra and there are hundreds of cases each year in poultry some including pigeons, it just when you get alot of birds culled it gets into the news. Its best to keep our heads down and get on with it. Jeremy..
Guest Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 I did post up that there was a curious pattern of PMV following in the footsteps of Avian flu outbreaks on the continent from around Feb / March this year. If I remember correctly also posted this up on General Pigeon Board at the time with the remark that it would be 'tragic/funny' if we were stopped by PMV rather than AI. Note that there is absolutely no difference in DEFRA strategy for these outbreaks ... the AI and PMV Contingency Plans are one and the same.
