I think its not what pigeon racing is about. All these people are forgetting its the bond you build up with the bird by keeping it and training it yourself from it being a little squab. Those lovely first days when it mocks you by not coming in and taking the mick out of you the first time the young birds batch up and fly higher and higher until they are little specks and you think they aren't coming back and them they fly for hours and trap.

 

Waiting on race day and the bird traps in for you and wins a hard race all because it loves its home. There more to life than money

I only caught the last 15 min's but what i saw i enjoyed.The missus said she wished she had seen it all.I am going to enter a one loft race next year but its just for the missus really she will pick the bird and enter it in her name ,i will continue to race my own birds.

It was abit sexist though,did'nt make the most of a prime time tv slot to sell the sport to women or youngsters.Wasted opportunity perhaps?

Some of the footage was very good :) but there was also alot of the programme that will do the sport no good what so ever, e.g The old boy with the loft that was no more than a total and utter disgrace. :-/ > >

 

If only we could get a pigeon man to produce a programme for one of the big TV stations.

 

Think you are being a bit snobbish here by ridiculing the old man and his loft, maybe the man just enjoys keeping a few birds and what he had was the best he could afford to have, great big fancy lofts and plenty money dont make anybody a better pigeon man,and he was obviously happy with what he had and thats what it is all about , think it's time for you to climb down off your high horse.

Got to agree with you there Tammy just watched the programme myself and have to say there are a lot of people with old lofts because we cant afford big fancy ones and we dont all win every week but we do like to take part just like everybody else who flies there doos does!

Ive got to admit the old gadge was a character, but how does it get young lads to join if we show just older men on the show. They should have visited a few younger members as well to show the younger generation that there are younger people racing. And also visted some modern tiled lofts to show the general public that pigeon lofts aren't all run down shacks etc

maybe he never bart but neither did the ones with plenty of money make it more appealing to anybody, and if the old guy who looked as if he lived alone was next door to you . you are more than able to help the old fellow tidy up ;D maybe i am more humble than you bart because i was never brought up with a silver spoon in my mouth like you were ;D and i would never criticise anybody because of what they lived like because there is an old saying ," but there for the grace of god go I"

I bet the old chap that people are referring to has seen these fly by night fanciers come and go in the past. Fancy new clean looking lofts can hide a disgrace inside. That mans birds will have been probably more healthy and indeed happier than some lofts that have a cosmetic outside appearance. so in fact looks can be deceiving. :

I do too, i love visiting these older fanciers and listening to their stories etc. Just think the public wouldnt see it the same. Im prob totally wrong as people who have seen it, enjoyed it etc. But ive had a lot of negative things said about keeping pigeons and it does take some convincing people there not scruffy streeties etc

 

If anyone visted Thornaby lofts for example, some are a disgrace and anyone passing would think they were run down sheds. One loft is leaning about 30degrees, i wouldnt keep streeties in it lol

Thats just the houses in Thornaby. A lot of the older successful fanciers don't charge stupid mad prices for Pigeons as well and will chuck a few free ones or eggs in for the novice.
