I've just been to collect a stray from a non fancier - The bird is totally emaciated with a keel like a razor. His eyes are bright and he is quite alert but he keeps falling over when I've moved him and I am worried that this might be a sign of paramyxo? I am hand feeding it with small seed and I feel that because he is fairly alert I might stand a chance of bringing him back from the brink and then repatriating him. He is isolated from my own birds but is nevertheless in close proximity and i am worried for my youngsters which havent been injected yet.

Anyone know why it should be falling over?

have you reported the pigeon.to be honest i would not be messing around with it what ever is wrong with it im no expert but there is a chance you could carry it on your clothes into your loft

Havent reported it yet Mac, was going to see if I could bring it round before contacting the owner. It is wing stamped and has a race rubber, so should have been vaccinated - so do you think it could be para?

I'd like to be able to tell the finder that we done our best for it but if this is a sign of paramyxo then I will put it down and inform the owner - just like some confirmation of the signs if anyone has experienced it?

Sounds like a virious to me circo/adino the bird looses body weight very quickly and will proberbly die over night dont put it any where near your own birds as you dont know what it has quartine and report and let the owner decide its fate remember and disenfect your self completly before going near your own birds!!!!!!!!!

Its an 06 bird with an E prefix and I think the number begins 73,,,,,  I will check in the morning and also post the telephone number that is on the wing. someone may recognise it. The bird is a gay pied if it helps to identify it.

If its emaciated- they tend to fall over through being so weak  ::)

Have you lot never had a bird come home, so weak, you don't know how it made it back - no breast muscles at all - just bones and feathers, s...ing through the eye of a needle unable to stand up

I have, one last year - and one today

If its a race bird it won't be PMV - because it will have been vaccinated, won't it? They have to be - or you can't race them

Pigeon is probably just tired and dehydrated, needs rest, food and a drink, if you touch it wash your hands before going to your own birds, and just see how it is in a couple of days, you usually find they begin to pick up all at once.

Checked it this morning - is still ok and still quite bright. Its crop is now hard - probably from what I fed it last night.

Thank you Paul and RedCheq. I just wanted to know that it wasnt a disease. I'm sure that I can bring the bird round if the symptoms are just of exhaution. It was the falling over bit that worried me.

It is a gay pied Ring No 06. E. 74023. - phone number 01666 510253. I'll make sure that I can bring him around before contacting the owner - unless anyone recognises the phone number.

Thanx all

Agree that bird sounds flown-out rather than diseased and unsteady probably because of dehydration and lack of good quality food. Advice on washing hands before tending other birds is good too - but would still advise tend your other birds first and this bird last.

it sounds to me as if its just weak from lack of food and water dave but i would still keep it isolated just to be on the safe side?  if youve got the time your probabley better off feeding it little and often also making sure its getting enough water as pigeons usually go for a 2nd drink about 1 hr after eating, also i find a little bit of glucose in the water can help them perk up, well done for making the effort to help the pigeon, hopefully he/she will soon be back its feet

ps i also read somewhere that half a brewers yeast tablet can work wonders on recovering pigeons

Thanks for your post Kev, It is isolated and I am being very careful with washing my hands etc.

It is still very weak and still falling over but I think that I have learnt that the difference between a sick pigeon and an exhausted pigeon is the brightness of the eye. (I hope I don't regret it).

think if it was paramyxo ,,, it wouldnt be able to pick up grub,, it affects there nervous system and one of the firsr symtoms are ,pecking at the grain but missing it  ,, the birds probably exhuasted and maybe hurt  also

hi dave  how is your stray getting on-is he/she eating and standing ok yet?  if not id think about getting him/her to the nearest pdsa/vet        kev  :-/

You say, its crop is now hard. let's hope you haven't overdone the feeding, because a pigeon fed too much in the condition you describe, will get worse instead of better.

i would give it another day of feeding it little and often dave and make sure its getting enough water then if it doesnt start to perk up maybe you could take it to a local pdsa or rspca? if it doesnt start to show some improvement soon then its obviously suffering from something other than exhaustion, i hope things improve soon dave? try keep us posted on here  good luck  kev
