as usual an interesting posting ,roland,

the bit that gets me about the hawks, is a paragraph from a leaflet from the reddings,

A FARMER HAS THE RIGHT TO PROTECT HIS SHEEP FROM A STRAY DOG, IF A FOX OR RAT WERE TO ENTER A FANCIERS LOFT, AND DESTROY HIS PIGEONS, HE WOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEFEND HIS PROPERTY, IN THIS CASE  PIGEONS, BY KILLING THE ATTACKER.  YET IF A RAPTOR ATTACKS HIS PROPERTY , THE SAME WAY, EITHER ACTUALLY IN HIS LOFT OR TAKING PIGEONS FROM  AROUND HIS LOFT,  ,,,,,",HE HAS NO LEGAL RIGHT TO PROTECT HIS PROPERTY,",,,,,,THIS IS JUST PLAIN STUPID

when I moved to the area over 6 yrs ago,the local cardenden club had cards to mark brief details of such attacks and then send them in. Was that to the rspb? Is there any system of reporting these attacks and someone to collate and give a response to these distraught fanciers.Including myself.

Too many have sparrowhawks, buzzards waiting by lofts for their packed lunch being opened.

I regularly feed the pair of crows that live in the woods at the back-they have proved invaluable warning me of cats and hawks as either come into their territory.

as you will see in the past posts poly ,, i had reported an  attack to the rspb , you will see the answer????  at least a pair of crows nesting on their own will soon let you know if theirs hawks, cats, etc  about, but sometimes , even they get a bit over protective , and will actualy go for a young pigeon [even catch and kill them] but would rather have the crows than the sparrowhawks

I wrote to the RSPB 3 times about the fact that my birds were attacked within 5 minutes of being let out every day and they really couldn't have cared less, they're not interested in protecting pigeons or any other birds. The only thing they are interested in is protecting and releasing birds of prey.

Wondered if it would be worth responding with a comment or better still emailing a picture of a raptor taking a song bird, just to show there's usually two sides to a story. Would caution against pic of hawk / pigeon as it would tie in too nicely with raptor poisoner comment ie pigeon fancier = raptor poisoner.
