Hogni Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Well me and my wife have been talking about it for some time now, that is to move to a foreign country, you know experience something new and all that.Mainly we have talked about moving to the U.K. or Denmark because we speak both languages. Of course i would like to race pigeons in the country i move to so that makes the U.K. a favorite for me. But there are more factors that contribute to this kind of decision like would i get a good job and a decent house, now we have a one month old son so of course we want the best things for him. So i was hoping you guys and girls could educate me and make the decision easier. I already know everything is less expensive over there then here in Iceland. Is there a chance for a foreigner to get a decent job or a job at all? Are there any websites that would be a good read for me? Any info would be appriciated. Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance ;Dyou would be made welcome by many i am sure , congratulations on the birth of the youngster ;D if you are prepared to work , you will find work , absolutely no doubt about it . i considered a job offer in my youth in Reyjavik , but did not take it up , also passed by an opportunity to work in Australia ,i am not well educated or a particular high flyer but classed myself as a hard working man . if you are young and have a little ambition i would think the experience alone would be enough , its too late when you are old sitting in a chair regretting what may have been?? best of luck to you and your wife , only you can make the decision . regards andy
Guest Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 I think the first thing you need to do is work thro the red tape. There's something called the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 which governs job applicants eligibility to work in UK. Only reason I know this is I have been job hunting for a while and when called to interview I've to bring one from a number of documents to prove I am eligible to work here [i was born here ;D ] So someone in UK Immigration seems best first contact to check out how to get a UK Work Permit.
Hogni Posted October 28, 2007 Author Report Posted October 28, 2007 Yes i realise that there is good competition in all countries but between England and Denmark i prefer England.
Roland Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Never mind the rest.... the UK is the best for true sport ... Ireland on parr with the Sea as well. Yes Belgium may have heaps swamping the same plot with birds about 12 feet high .... but to test the metal, Ireland or the UK are as good as any in the whole wide world. Makes one laugh when pne sees a fancer that has moved and BOUGHT his position / location say 'Well to Belguim to compete with the best ... when really if they bought a plot in the WEST side and THEN won regularly out of turn, YES He would have achieved something, something special, for very few have, and a lot more daren't even try,
Ronnie Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Aside from the pigeons .i would stay away from the uk.There is work if your prepeared to look for it but a lot of competition for jobs now.(I'm in the northwest of England so it may be different in other parts). There is not as much freedom in the uk as ther used to be and you are taxed on virtually everything. But then again i am basing this on my personal experiance's of being born here and growing up with the change's happening around me. On the pigeon side of thing's i would think it would be hard to get a better place . If you do decide to come over try for a job on the Railway i dont think you will get a better job as easy

DOVEScot Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 agree ronnie, i would stay away from u.k if i could!! to much tax a nd politics, and we now have to speak polish round here now to fit ii!! :-/ :X :X : Agree totally in theory, but have you seen the prices in Iceland. Athough we are taxed heavily, if the system was used honestly then it would be the best system in the world. Hogni you would not be better securing employment before you came especially if you have a young one to consider, the more skills you have the better chance you have, even better if you have a trade or quailifications The country seems to be awash with eastern block workers who are willing to snap up any job going, to the point it's becoming nearhand impossible to be attended to by anything else The new proposed european "blue card" being introduced may control your decission to move within Europe. Apart from that, welcome to the UK and maybe Scotland from all at the Dan Clan if decide to come
Hogni Posted October 28, 2007 Author Report Posted October 28, 2007 Well if you guys were here in Iceland i think you´d be happy about the taxes in the U.K. as i think we are the most taxed people in the world, at the end of the month 70%-80% of my paycheck has gone to all kinds of taxes. And about the polish, here in Iceland we are about 300.000 people of which 40.000 are polish
jazzman Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 if you want a job and willing 2 look for one then you will get one ;D jazzman

REDCHEQHEN Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Hogni - never mind the price of beer or bears ;D Whats the weather like (and temperature) and how many hours of daylight have you got in Iceland at the moment? The answer could bring a bit of sunshine to our lives and show us how well off we are here ;D ;D We ( I) have had a rainy start to the day, but the sun is now shining ;D

Hogni Posted October 28, 2007 Author Report Posted October 28, 2007 In the summer we have sunshine(light) 24/7 but in december until february it´s about 3-5 hours of daylight but now the sun comes up between 9 and 10 in the morning and sets at about 18:00 and the tempreture is about 0° celsius and outside everything has become white for the first time this winter
