Am possibly moving to Glasgow area with work. Any clubs left up there?

 

Most of the central belt is within an easy hour's commuting of Glasgow, by car or by train. You can basically pick where you want to stay and have a wide choice from clubs in a wide choice of Feds: Ayrshire, Renfrew, West of Scotland, Glasgow, South Lanarkshire, Lanarkshire, Forth & Clyde and North West.

Yes I see where your at thought the drag of the birds from west of Scotland and Up North Combine  should bring them in sooner than Edinburgh. Also, from Frankfurt the birds are far enough south that they would be close to land for much of the later part of the crossing.

 

Share Gareth's uncertainty on how the birds will actually behave crossing the North Sea when faced with a strong SW wind. Read a piece by wing commander Lea Rayner yonks ago about how the race bird will 'compensate' when wind blows it off the course it would like to take. If I remember and understood his work correctly, the birds are unlikely to head directly into the wind to make for nearest landfall, but will allow themselves to be pushed 'east and north' by the wind before gradually pushing into and against the wind, correcting all the time to a truer course for home, with actual landfall possibly many many miles north of nearest landfall?  

 

If that is true, I think the number of daylight hours the birds have available to make landfall is absolutely critical to success in a race of this type.

A quick reply to red cheq Clermont is only 430 to most thats not long distance yes this years Bourges was up this year but the NE is sprint/middle distance mad .How many Blue Boys are thier now and that statement came from a number of UNC flyers good ones . How many fly 600 plus more than once a year up there and how many fly NFC or BICC ?.

 

 

For London fliers - the greatest distance for any of these German racepoints is 450 miles

in all national races there will be area's that are more suitable than other's but you have to look beyond that, take the barcelona international there's flyer's all across europe the winner's will get good publicity but also birds putting up tremendous performances flying off the line ,take robert ben not living in the best of area's but getting good positions and plenty of good publicity. until we start to fly in big organisations in this country we'll alway's be looked upon as mickey mouse racer's

Nice one thunderbolt. Couldn't have put it better. Too many are desparte to beat clubmates by ten birds from no distance. Does nothing for the game and no one remembers them. This could put UK on the map.

Yes, we are still going .If you check the SNFC results you will see Kirkintilloch in it more than 20 times this year.We have new premises this year and things are looking up.Old Willie Carr left the club to go and fly with another club ( Campsie ).They concentrate more on club racing than National.

Can we get an idea of suitable provisional date for this race. IE does mid July sound near it? This season coming may be too soon but 2009 could happen. What do you think?

pigeons do not like flying over water , but if forced to, and the weather perfect , will do it ok, my thoughts would be the pigeon would take the" near" shortest route over sea.,,,but they would do it  if the weather was favourable and,,would take a special pigeon to compete

so if you took the birds out into the north sea and let them go they have got to fly and guess what not a peregrine in site till the hit the coast

so rather than the transporter going south go east to rosyth and get them out to sea

what route the pigeons would take no one knows. no factual evidence available. evidence on the thery pigeons do not like water not available proof of writings of wing commander so and so , not available. same poster would have us believe pigeon flew 700 mles over water to norway but that flying from frankfurt too big a task. does not stack. fact pigeons from barcelona are timing at 2, 3, 4 in the morning. i do not think they are taking public transport when it gets dark. the only way we will know is if we try. and try repeatedly.

What we need is to give convoyer / controller a lot of lattitude. If wind too strong then hold etc. How often have birds been held for days due to weather and end up released in weather as bad as day one because "they need to go" mentality prevails. Get a good controller and let him be and Im up for this.

The longest race is usually the 1st week in July, tho this year SNFC propose to hold it a week earlier, and the 3rd & last channel race is usually 3rd week in July.

same poster would have us believe pigeon flew 700 mles over water to norway.                                                                                                                              I take it that johno doubts bruno had a pigeon reported in  norway being in the same club i can assure him he did the bird landed on an oilrig it was taken to the mainland and was due to be picked up by a fellow club member when scotland were playing norway, but alas it now lives a happy life in its new home

I think any one who realy wants to race this one will nothing to do with other nat clubs and if you wait to try and suit every one we will never get it off the road
