Delboy Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 I was like a maniac shouting in my garden this afternoon as I witnessed a peregrine swoop and take one of my best racers, plucking it in mid air , only maybe 50 feet above me.The crows were attacking it as it fluttered away with one of my prize birds. I stay in a scheme and I have never witnessed this before in a built up area, although I know they are hunting more, now, in the inner cities .Ten minutes before this attack, my ybs were bombarded with a sparrowhawk and I have 5 missing.Tell me this, when the hell are we going to get peace from these b......s
ALF Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Sorry to hear that percy took 1 of your best racers Derek but as you say they are in the schemes now as we have been getting hit by 1 of them all winter and the hawk is there just about every day it was sitting on top of the guy's loft next door to mine on wednesday morning as it watched his doos : : : : : : ps...i hope you get your y/b's back mate
Guest mikkey Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 sorry to hear about your birds mate i know how you feel, we'll never get any peace from the swines :-/
just ask me Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 i think its up to the pigeon fanicer to sort this problem out if every pigeon fanicer done a small bit about the prob and i dont think we can depend on the goverments to sort this one out
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 You would wonder if it could get any worse, 2-3 years ago everyone was getting hammered by the sparrowhawk but nearly every fancier you speak to now up in the west of Scotland are getting hammered by the Peregrine. It's long gone now that you only had to worry about the Peregrine when racing through the hills on race day. Derek sorry to hear about the sparrowhawk ;) ;) ;)and Peregrine attack hope you get the young birds back soon. What can be done! well i think it is going to be the case that fanciers are going to have to take drastic action if they want to not only race their pigeons but also in just keeping them.
just ask me Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 totally agree wiyh u gareth it wont take a whole lot of effort if everyone does a little bit
Henrik Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 We,ve got one in Prestonpans now took one off my birds 2 wks ago. Think they are nesting at Cockenzie Power Station.
Merlin Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Why not do whats been suggested on another thread, and more forcibily it seems on another site, stop treating our birds for canker.unless they show clinical signs of same, read IBs posts on Eagle Owl thread
Guest chrisss Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 i think its up to the pigeon fanicer to sort this problem out if every pigeon fanicer done a small bit about the prob and i dont think we can depend on the goverments to sort this one out whilst none would condone breaking the law ;D ;D ;D ;D, it has got to be time for a little bit of self help, waiting for the rpra/rspb to do anything will get us no where, i have no hawks in my local area [yet] so i have no first hand idea what you guys go through on a daily basis it must be heartbreaking to have to sit there like a dummy while your birds are murdered ,the damned things should not be in the towns any way ,sorry to state the bleeding obvious
ALF Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Sparrowhawks are easy but percy well thats a different problem alltogether : : :
just ask me Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 merlin its a good idea if it works but i cant see fanicers stop treating there birds really cant eagle owl a good idea too its like this every fanicer knows what has to be done we just have to get up off our backsides to do it had a fanicer telling to me he was getting attacked for the last 3 months couldent belive that he didint sort the problem . all i know is that i wont have one attacking mine around the loft simple as

I agree with you 100% Gareth but we have been saying this for years and years.Action has to be taken NOW, not next year or the year after.Pigeon Racing isnt a sport anymore, it has become a worry. You worry about Percy when you are training, you worry when you are racing and now you worry letting the poor *expletive removed* out.

Guest mikkey Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Sparrowhawks are easy but percy well thats a different problem alltogether : : : i wish you could sort my sparrowhawk problem out, although i havent seen it for a week, maybe its nesting or even better its ,well you know what would be better
just ask me Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 mikkey hope im wrong but the hen could be gone to nest and u wont see her for a few weeks and then she will be back hungier then ever as the cock mostly catches blackbirds thrushes and all that she wiil have to feed the young as well as herself
Merlin Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Justaskme Well its a decision each fancier has to make, mine is not to flock/treat or routinely treat, something I havent done for last nine years,in that time,in fairness for some years previous,I have not seen canker break out in any of my birds,if it does, I would treat individual bird, this practice has not made the slightest bit of difference to their racing ability in that nine years, now the real issue if Raptor problem overpopulation is not halted, this whole racing game of ours is in deep S... when you blind/routine treat, a fancier is actually making these food parcels safe and hygenic,by removing toxins that will kill its predators, now if fanciers would want to do something so simple to protect our sport/game,how can we expect any outsider to help.
Guest mikkey Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 mikkey hope im wrong but the hen could be gone to nest and u wont see her for a few weeks and then she will be back hungier then ever as the cock mostly catches blackbirds thrushes and all that she wiil have to feed the young as well as herself well if thats the case hopefully ill have a few more birds, so any attacks wont hit me so hard, but then again am i making things worse by giving it more birds to prey on, its a bit of a catch 22 situation, if i only have a few birds the swine will take me outta the game, if i have many birds maybe itll attack more, its a lose lose situation :-/
just ask me Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 merlin i agree with what u are doing am along the same lines myself but think that most fanicers wont go along with this just my opion and im not saying to ask anyone one else to help us ot is up to ourselves to fix our problem just saying everyone has to do there bit in geting rid of this problem i think its a great idea and i belive the way that u are treating your pigeons is the way to a long term sucess just cant see the majorigy following this progam of not treating for cancer so i think other ways have to be looked at that most fanicers will give a go
just ask me Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 mikkey there must be other ways to get rid of this problem surelly
Guest mikkey Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 mikkey there must be other ways to get rid of this problem surelly yes there is mate and believe me i have tried but it wont stay still long enough if you get my drift ;D
Guest Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 What are the grouse keepers doing about the problem think they are suffering just as much as we are perhaps it would be worth trying to work with them shoot the hawks and not the grouse
THE FIFER Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 the only way you will get anything done regarding birds of pray is by the general public kicking up a noise to the rspb and leaving the rspb membership if nothing is done, but this would take a lot of the public, and i dont ever see it happen, as the majority of the public dont think very much about pigeons they think they are all the same as the ones in the street,
just ask me Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 fifer i think it wil be hard to turn around the general public opion on this its up too us really
frank-123 Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 sorry to hear you lost one delboy talking with a felow club member who said what chance have the birds got sparrowhawks from ground level and peregrines from above somebody is going to get caught killing one of these birds of prey just out of frustration and anger but what will we do
