What happenned today from France?

I cannot remember a stranger race form France, than the one that I experienced today. I was out there early,  expecting possibly, a mile a minute with the sun belting down, disapearing now and then, behind some northerly flowing clouds.  But this evening has been like a miserable winters night, putting the blocks on even the best of our birds. I have a feeling the damaged occurred on the French side. I just can't remember such scanty returns in south winds. Many, many  GOOD birds are down tonight. What do you think happenned?

ours were up from messac at 7.00. got 22/23 and doing 1884 for 277 miles (clocked at 11.19). doesn't look like there was a problem in france or the channel at that point.

Thanks Robie 1, But our birds flying into N.Westerly destinations, normally are crosisng in the Wight/Portland area. Where the visibility was forecast as moderate. Maybe it wasn't and many turned back. But birds, especially in a south wind should be above any sea mist

etc.

Hi Vic, the weather has been dreadful in Devon today, strong winds, heavy showers prolonged at times. Started last night around 6, that's why returns were sporadic from the NFC Tarbes, the best beat the weather and did incredible velocities. If you're birds stayed on line they would have hit the bad weather.

I will be honest, by saying that I timed my 8th and 9th choice out of nine sent, (two yearlings). Seems the "stay on liners" come unstuck. THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS. Cheers, Vic.

I drove along the sea front at 9:45ish and could see the coastline of France a distance of 21mls away.  We had a terrific downpour of rain for about 3mins in the morning and then the day turned out good.  Our birds were at Lyndhurst 133mls and doing well over 1800ypm and when you get races like that, it's hard to understand what goes wrong elsewhere in similar conditions although over a greater distance.  I would think the damage was done before they crossed the channel.

I think you'll find the weather was dodge over the west of England , the winds I assume were still s or se variable in France for convoys flying to the west of Britain from France the wind would have been good and brought the birds in around the jurassic coast to Plymouth, this was where the severe weather was sitting. We were watching Wimbledon ladies final yesterday afternon on the telly which was bathed in sunshine...... here it was like a winter's day, cold, windy and very wet!

we were racing from Lessay (156miles) to us in Hungerford, nr Newbury....Up at 0645am in south west wind, we got 4 together and the rest trunddled in at regular intervals, majority from the back ended with 23 out of 24, first ones doing 1864ypm

The weather was heavy rain all night until 0845hrs then clear spells, our birds dropped at 0910hrs.

Just goes to show what a hell of a job it is to be a race controller, the larger the geographic area the bigger the nightmare!

Your dead right albear.......must be a nightmare of a job!!

They get slated if they lib them and we have a bad race, and they slate them if they hold and people think they would have had a good race..

It seems that the heavy rain was responsible for the shambolic returns. I got three more of the older ones  this morning within 15 minutes. around eightish. Their wattles as red as their feet.  I'm still short of my 1st and 2nd choice. I'm voting for the comeback races after this! lol

We had a comeback race from Lessay 110mls, lib at 9.30 Sat, leading birds were doing well over 1800. I sent 9 had them all within 30mins.(bit off the pace).

Weather here in Portsmouth was broken cloud, plenty of sun and a strong SW wind.

I have nothing from 4 sent. These last 2 French races have been the worst I have competed in. I am now seriously looking at my management. Not the birds me.

It would seem to me that thw birds from YPRES had the best race of the 3 into Scotland.

The West Durham Amal has had a stinking race from Clearmont yesterday with people having 20 and 30's missing the winners did good vel's but there was only 11 birds back in our fed last night. Criminal to throw them really they haven't stood a chance.

I dropped 3 from  Niort, still haven't seen my 1st or 2nd choice. I don't normally winter birds that cant do Niort in a reasonable time. But this year, if either of them return, they will be given another chance. Whats happening to our summers?
