allenyeates Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 I have been a countryman/hunter all my life and my forefathers before me in this country and home in Ireland. But this year (perhaps the wet summer and late harvest) has been the worst for rat/mice activity
OLDYELLOW Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 probably some of the problem is some dint get to harvest so alot of cerials sat in fields later so more food more rodents
REDCHEQHEN Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 and not getting your bins emptied every week..... never seen a rat where I live - but saw three last year (on separate occasions) in next major town to me - running across the road in front of me in broad daylight (I was on foot not in the car ) .......... I didn't scream though (evil)
Roland Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 EVERYBODY has at the moment Rats or Mice. Never mind about not seeing any. One or the other, but not both. Rats eat mice, so of course they don't mix. I fortunately have Mice... trapped about 16 so far this past 3 weeks. They will be coming into the House in droves of the fields. When the weather turns cooler in they come. Many of course are residents. Sister in - laws nieghbours told her to stop feeding the Rats on her shed roof. Perplex she said I don't... it was for the Birds of course, but no one told the rats. So you will nigh certainly have one or the other. Mate never believe me ... put some traps outs Rats / Mice... he has mice too.
allenyeates Posted October 9, 2008 Author Report Posted October 9, 2008 I have been a countryman/hunter all my life and my forefathers before me in this country and home in Ireland. But this year (perhaps the wet summer and late harvest) has been the worst for rat/mice activity I have ever known. Yes I know I live in the country but town/city dwellers will see this Jan/Feb time. Please be aware and take precausions now as these will affect the moult or early breeders. As well as drinker or corn contamination. My son is a full time pest controller and his work with rats quadrupled this autumn. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Please be aware that where you live in this country extra rats/mice may attract mink/stoats foxes etc..... None of which are welcome around our birds
ChrisMaidment08 Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 they do say you are never more than 25 ft from one or other if its true makes you wonder
The Game Keeper Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 i fully agree with you it would shock people if they ever saw rats on the move thre as always been rat problems folk just fail to notice them around sheds etc i am forever killing the varmints you must always have bait or atrap set as they are working against them 24 hrs stops a build up of rats and mice

Fair Play Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Rats on the move,we called it a "Rat Flitting" as we are near the river it is a sight to see nothing haphazard single file (20/30 and always seem to know where they are going.
Roland Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Remember once, this time of year talking to the Farmer, when i had to tuck me trousers into me socks quick. 1000'S of rats literually came across the road into the barn. Remember when terriers contests were prevalent with rats.... 100's upon 100's.
Roland Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 How come there is two now of BEWARE RATS ABOUT ?
DOVEScot Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 you been drinking roland only one thread on rats ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D It looks like there has been a flitting ;D ;D ;D We had Rats in the mines, they live in areas and if there were any mice they eradicate them by eating them as they both have the same diets so they are a threat to food supplies. However if food is in abundance they will tolerate the mice, also rats will grow to a considerable size when feeding is good because they are lazy eaters, where as mice never stop and always maintain a similar size and can well outrun the rats. Rats will win because they are far more intelligent than mice :-/ They both like bread and antifreeze luckily it doesn't like them and never become immune to it like the poisons ;)
Guest strapper Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 anti freeze is a killer to all human and animal life.
jonjon Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 will that kill the two legged type as well
shotgun tim Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 you are 6ft away from a rat not 25ft sorry to be the bearer of bad news
Guest slugmonkey Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Antifreeze will kill dogs and cats as well
LISTER Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Antifreeze will kill dogs and CATS as well OH DEAR SHAME LOL ;)
carlsberg Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Antifreeze will kill dogs and cats as well i can see this getting pulled by the mods
DOVEScot Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Surely not, it is factual and making members aware of the dangers and benefits of antifreeze :-/
DOVEScot Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Also Rats are perimeter animals, they are nocturnal and do not generally cut across an area as they fear predators from above, place any deterrents around the outside of your property for best results We place any traps or poisons under an upturned milk crate or mushroom basket, this keep the birds or your pets from accidentally getting to them :-/
Roland Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Tho it was 7 actually... but too close whatever lol.ught
Roland Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Yes and they perfer the Wall or what ever to their right. Niether Rats nor mice will give up the chance of going into a pipe. Sprinkle oats with Cement ot a little anti freeze and leave in a pipe ... keeps it ot of harms way. Like the man asked 'Is antifreeze any good for rats? 'No' I said 'It kills them'. It is sweet so most creatures like it. ' lol
jimmy white Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 rats are never very far away , and bad for disease ,both for the pigeons and yourself , allthough a rather serious topic, it can be a serious problem,,, grain left out,, any food at all for the wild birds will attract rats , rats will actually kill the pigeons , to eat the contents of their crop.where i live , more or less in the country have poison allways down [out of harms way, except to the rats] also traps set ,i also have allways kept ferrets most of my life ,,, anyone seeing rats near your loft will automatically blame the pigeons , which is not neccessary true, i will enclose a very contravertial picture, of which i have a few,, any neighbours blaming my pigeons are shown these ,,,,,and explained "im doing my bit,,are you doing yours? by leaving nothing edible out over night for the wild birds etc
