Not even thought about it, maybe middle of January when its a bit warmer.

We are a little out there at the minute as around half the stock are moving to a friends house for him to breed from so need to allow time for all to settle back down after the move.

would just like to explain to any new commer on mating up :)

if you race natural , then mate your birds now, they,ll be sitting on their second round  about beginning of feb , after sitting 10 or so days , on these second round eggs , they will begin to throw their first flight, then carry on moulting, these birds will be in no state to race in the bigger races in june , july , as they will be far to advanced in the moult ,, just a word of warning to newcommers to the sport,

w hood birds do not sit more than 10 days [best being 8 days]  on their second round , therefore hold their flights.

i am just mentioning this as some newcommers , very keen and meaning well , will pair their racers up now , trying to get plenty yb,s , breeding two or even three rounds ,, these racers if mated and raced will not see more than half the season , because they,ll be too advanced in the moult. so maybe just a thought , for these lads  :)

Thanks for that. As a novice I did not realise this, lol. I would have just bred them. Would pairing them up on the 1st of Jan be ok?

Thank you

David

Hi Jimmy,

Interesting reading as this is my first season breeding / racing.

I have been advised to pair up around xmas time.

It is my intention to take just 1 round from the birds, this hopefully giving me 16ybs and have been offered ybs from local lads, plus my space is not to great.

if I have my calculations right I should have weaned ybs around mid feb time, will these have to be darkened down (darkness) or can I keep them natural?

no probs with the stock birds josh,  any time really,, just means your feeding the yb longer, :),  but with the stock birds you might want to breed more yb,s ,,its really the racers the prob sometimes [cant burn the candle at both ends   with them  :)]

hi david,, sometimes you can work back the way, with your racers, depending on what type of racing your aim is,, a bird usually [but not allways, with pigeons :)] comes into form after its thrown its first flight ,so for the races you intend trying work back [again this is natural im talking about] 10 days on eggs ,, 24 days rearing young,, 18   days  to hatch [theyll lay quicker in the summer ,often 7 days ] 14 days laying first eggs ,, all in all if natural ,,about 90 days b4 the races you want to do well in  :)

but with w hood its ok to pair and rear ybs at xmas time , but not letting these birds sit longer than 8 days on their second round ,, as they will hold their flights ,,,,,,,,but by mating early , really just means your feeding your yb,s longer, :) myself , personally would mate w hood cocks up the sat after b pool , these breed good enough darkness yb,s,,, and the cocks [if w hood ] just be ready for the first races ,, and if done properly you can keep these cocks going 10 weeks or so in racing form to varying degrees  :)

how much more  darkness could you give them :) its dark at 3 30 pm now :) light at 9 am or so :)

really if you want natural birds in condition for the classic races i would pair  90 days b4 them , i would say  pair  the older birds, destined for these races ,,then  [why do fanciers allways say they  mate up on ??  why not different times? , so they come in to form different times  :)]
