Guest Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 Hi all ive been following Vics post about Paratyphoid with interest and that got me thinking (i know that could be dangerous) anyhow i came with an idea that if members of PB kept a record of if/when thier birds contracted Paratyphoid then in the winter next year we could have an on site discussion /debate to see if there was any similarities ie time of year ,area ,had you done anything just prior to illness, etc now i know this is asking fanciers to be as honest as our good friend Mr cards on the table Vic but you never know we may find a common denominator. Some may find an alternative or better treatment than they use now ,at worst we will have something to discuss on the cold winter nights this is just an idea what are your thoughts regards Tony
pjc Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 good idea which would maybe help find the cause but how many fanciers don't even know they've got it or even what it is? Phil
Guest Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 a lot of fanciers treat for it as a preventative i treat twice a year after y/b raceing and before pairing up i had it 3 years ago and since treating touch wood have had no problems i treat with the powder form of parastop dave
john@formula 1 lofts Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 I had this in 2002 after buying a pair of birds in from a very well known breeding loft at the time (has sold up since so i will not name them) Back then i did not no anything about this illness and i lost a lot of birds. and after battling with if for 18 months a battle i was losing i decided to eliminate all my remaining stock birds and kept the few races i had in 1 section totally burnt out the lofts then bleached them before putting in a new floor throughout. i then brought new stock birds which was the start of Formula 1 lofts. since then i have read a lot on this subject and have spoken to various vets around the world on this. the main time this flares up is when the birds are under stress pairing and molting for stock and also racing training for race birds and some times when the y/b's are out for the first time and they night out and this stress them out and it can flare up. i think a lot of people confuse a mild dose as y/b sickness these days. to try to stop it ever coming back i treat with derweert parastop twice a year end of sept and end of march for the race birds just the once for the stock in sept. i also inject after the moult late nov early dec but what i do is just inject no baytril treatment beforehand as i have been told and from my previous experience in 2002 if they are carriers when jabbed without a pre treatment it will knock them side ways so if anything was to show ill effect after the jab it is gone in a flash thankfully i have not had any issues since doing this routine. hope this may help a bit by the way i was told by one of the best pigeon vets in the world in my opinion that 1 in 3 lofts has this in there flock. John
Ronnie Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 If one in three lofts has this you can bet its a lot more now. Is it salmonella based or are the symptoms just the same?
Guest Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 [bLIND TREATMENT] do you test your birds before you treat them with parastop formula 1.

John Well John you are echoing my sentiments and expierence as I have posted. Even the 1 in three, which I harp on about.... too many didn't know it even exists, and treat willy nilly, Why I ever donated birds etc. May do now, but have posted times what I did, about the same as you. I recomend Vykron used regularly. The main problem is Clear Both, the birds and then the loft.
Guest IB Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 Interesting posts. I'd like to pick up on the pre-treatment with Baytril prior to Vaccination - the source of this advice isn't quoted; I see there is a recent post on Vic's thread which I assume gave rise to the practice? If I read it correctly it is based on assumption from observation - this happened, so I assume. It directly contradicts a scientific paper on salmonella ('Swedish paper') which I found on World Organisation for Animal Health Website, which I also posted-up on Vic's thread last night. Basically it says treat salmonella with antibiotics, and you'll most likley spread it.
REDCHEQHEN Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 If your birds arekept in a mouse proof loft - don't peck in the garden and don't go in a race basket - you can reasonably assume your birds are safe - but not 100% none of the above - all birds are at risk and I wish you'd get a life IB
john@formula 1 lofts Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 yes i routinely treat with Parastop also Canker twice a year other then that no i would always consult a vet if any other issues and i have them tested twice a year before pairing and before racing as well. After speaking to Derweert and a pigeon vet in America they both thought it is worth treating with parastop at the times stated. hope this helps John
