Good question and like must things in this sport has loads of answers. if a complete novice i would say a few gift birds are a good place to start to help find what sort of birds suit you and make the mistakes we all make when you first start etc.

but i think if you have a couple of years experience then it can be useful to buy a family of birds in maybe from someone out of the area and from a reputable seller who if he is worth anything would be willing to give advice and help as required

good advice john but i think the big mistake allot of us made when we started was trying to go too far too soon and new starts are still doing it but if they are lucky enough to meet a good fancier thats the best way to start and maybe before even getting the birds help him/her about their loft for as long as they can you cant beat hands on experience like that eyes open and mouth shut will put them on a sound footing

well i actually belive in buying out of your area at end of the day in a lot of cases u wont get fanicers selling u top birds off there stock maybe off there widowhood cocks what my advice would be is look at results find what u think id a tough area to race into now u dont have to go for the top winning fancier a lot of the time as i know u can be living in the wrong location take my situation I'm living 20 mile or so in the wrong direction which is a lot as i only race pure sprint races  and last year with my widowhood cocks i in every race bar 2 i haven't been outside the top 20 in the fed and most times top 5  when no one in my area in the top 50 even

so really what i look for is birds getting results into area when they shouldn't be in the result and what i mean by results it don't have to be 1st

intresting question by the way

For anyone starting up think i would go for gift birds there are plenty of good ones about and plenty on places like here from decent fanciers who are willing to help you and give you some good advice along with them   If your going to buy for success could be a very expensive hobby for anyone starting up and not knowing what to get or where to get it from and if you do get it not knowing what to do with it

true enough rose but i think there very few top fanicers that will give a new starter birds off top birds in there area as unless there willing to pay not saying u rose as reputation precedes in what u have won and your posts here but i belive in going well out of your area as fancier has nothing to lose by selling to u and as i say if u can find a fancier that not winning out of turn but putting up decent results in the wrong area the price shouldn't be too bad i feel

just what i think

go to local pigeon club help out get to know some fanciers im sure they`d help with gift birds also go to fed squeaker sale pick up a bargain there thats what i would do.

I think i would agree probably look outside where you live Ive had people say they would breed me birds but i couldnt race them against them  :-/  Perhaps look to the older fancier who could give good advice as there seems to be quiet a few round now that have got good  birds but the lack of enthusiasm to race anymore and they wouldnt have all the work but could still get the enjoyment out of helping and seeing someone else race

fair point as if hes finished racing he has notting to lose by telling u anything and giveing u a bird or two  :-/ rose u have me thinking again  :)

gift birds, given willingly, are the best bet IMO for new starters. if a fancier wants to give you ybs...then he will want you to do well. the notion that you'll buy better is false...you may but you may not. i got given alot...but i know another fancier who started about the same time as me,elsewhere in norfolk who couldn't even buy a bird of his clubmates...so it varies. if you can, buy stock from a dispersal ( not a 'reduction' or 'closing stock loft' etc)...and breed from them. . as an inexperinced fancier you will probably loose a few birds getting going so if you buy some ybs....select a family...keep them and breed from them. you can allways race them later. it can be fun buying the odd bird...but i feel the money is often better spent on getting  lofts right and training. lastly if anyone is now starting and has an empty loft IMO get something flying in/out before your racers arrive (eg a couple of fantails trained to the tin )...its something i wish i'd done. also put a temp. avariy around the yb trap so ybs can get in /out loft...see their surroundings and get used to trap. then one day just take roof of  avariy...and pray  (dizzy)  . best of juck to all new starters next year :)

what would the members say would be the best advice for anyone starting up with pigeon racing, buy for success or gift birds.

Gift birds etc every time. Spend the first 2 years just learning the basics of the sport. By then !!!!!!!!!!! with a bit of luck, you will/should have made friends with one or two decent flyers in your local area as such. Then ????????, with their help if you so desire, you could spend your hard earned money on better quality birds etc.

Enjoy & always remember now (grin grin), most of us had to crawl before we could walk.

Gift birds for us, join your local club and help put birds throught, you get to handle

the clubs top flyers birds to the not so good birds,

Ask questions [,why and how and if,] go and look at there lofts, there is always someone who

will help and point u in the right direction.

But remember not to many birds and enjoy them :)

When i started up some 50 + years ago my late father said to me "read as much as you can listen to the fanciers that are winning, don't expect to win right away, it's a bonus when you do win.Pick yourself a good fancier and stick to him like s**t on your boots and get some late breds off him"

sorry if i went 'off topic' earlier with the 'fantails' ( which i havn't tried ) and 'settling cage ' bit( which i do use)......personally i hate loosing youngsters 'off the loft'...but in the end its all JMO :)

Fantastic advice. also make sure you start with a proper loft, ie: good ventilation and dry but not drafty also vermin free.  You can have the best birds in the world but if their home isn,t good they wont win much.
