sapper756 Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Would have to agree with the majority, far too cold and early for training birds, plenty of time ahead for this, be patient and think about your birds

fletch Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 crazy even if you want to be ultra competative in the first races. these birds will be knacerd by the 3rd or 4th race. my dad has won the first race 3 out of the last 5 years in a stromg club and he wont start til 2 weeks before the first race and they will only have 2 15 miles and then 3 30 miles,,

little sam Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 id agree to cold too early be knocked back before season starts Bang On there
jacksafc Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 If you saw a handful of birds being trained it could be open race specialists, if youre seeing hundreds its ferals heading back to the towns after fielding. The theories are good but to send to the first race in May would mean a 200 mile jump for us so birds will be out in March, trained and first race 4 april

heather down Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 far to cold at the moment. Ours have'nt been out yet weather too bad, hopefully this weekend if weather gets better. If you care for your birds then its cruel and thoughtless to train now.
alec guinness Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 the late great jock allan of symington trained some birds all through the year, hail rain or shine, snfc gold award winner "irish mick" was trained most days through the winter wherever jock was working, myself i have a team of 16 latebreds who are trained(short distances) right through the winter months on reasonabilly good days, historically previous teams of these latebreds have gone on in later years to score at national, combine & federation open racing. :) ;)
Guest Vic Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 The Rakers, streeters, scrags, call 'em what you want! have always been observed, during first light, going fielding at this time of year, perhaps for what the fields offer them before they start breeding seriously. Perhaps most of our unsuccessful birds should follow them!

Fair Play Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 The late Jock Allan was working in our area a number of years ago and got talking to the local pigeon men - his comments were " I would chuck the doors if I had to race into this area" and he was some flier. Same from a fancier who came through from Fife to pick up a couple of strays his comments "How the hell can you fly pigeon into this area" The birds need training but there are limits.
alec guinness Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 very good john but this guy was letting his birds go right into traffic, i know some will train l/breds etc during the winter but it wont be the birds that there going to race all season , and if you believe all these things about so called secrets then thats up to you. i know i dont agree about the guy letting birds go in traffic daft and dangerous,i was talking about winter training which i have no problems with if done properly,as for secrets dont quiet follow!!
