cemetary Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Does any one no when the hen starts to sit the eggs, i got hit with her yesterday when getting the birds in. I was standing at the hut at the time, when she came over from the back of the loft, i did see the starlings lifting a good bit away, i said where is it, then bang, she just got a hold of one by the wing, i shouted various things, but she didnt have a right grip of the bird, she let the bird go, what a fright i got, you wont to have seen the size of her,if i wasnt ther he was dead, one flew into the food shaking like hell, i got all them in. I was waiting for her to come back, but she never appeared.

Guest Owen Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 She'll be back. They usually apear at about the same time every day. Look on the internet for a Swedish Goshawk Trap. They are easy to make and they work really well. A tip for you concerning both Goshawks and Sparrow Hawks. If they make a kill DO NOT MOVE IT. They will come back for it. When they do, you can have a little talk to them and explain that you would rather they did not behave that way. On the other hand, you could take firmer action.

The SHU Sparrowhawk survey have recently caught and rehomed "several Sparrowhawks". The method used was that after a kill has been made to place a trap on the spot where the kill was made and the dead pigeon was then placed inside the trap and the Sparrowhwk caught. This reinforces the fact they always return and seems to work.
