in reality i bet they havn't even stopped pork imports from mexico...not that its probably much...but the point is surely they should have the same 'shut down' approach we have when we have something. if the virus is in people they can hardly ban racing but let people visit infected countries....can they ?

if a dog came in from france they would stop dogsetc coming in the country, if we have bird flu we can't move birds but how many planes fly in and out of mexico a day without restriction spreading disease?

Basically nothing to do with pigs. Its a new human influenza virus, DEFRA International risk assessment:-

Laboratory analysis of two virus isolates from cases in the USA confirmed the presence of influenza virus type A strain H1N1. The genetic sequence indicated recombination of North

American swine influenza, North American avian influenza, Human influenza virus and Eurasian swine influenza. This is a new recombination of virus strains, not previously

isolated.

Looks like this is the one they have been waiting for. So it's not movement of animals that needs controlled, it's movement of people .

Influenza-like disease was recognized clinically among pigs in the United States during the late summer and fall of 1918, and recent evidence clearly indicates that the 1918 human virus and the 1930s swine viruses are closely related. However, it remains unclear whether these viruses appeared first in people and then spread to pigs, or vice versa. H1N1 influenza viruses have continued to infect pigs in the United States ever since the 1930s. In addition, H3 subtype viruses have infected pigs in Europe, Asia and, as of the fall of 1998, in the U.S.

WHO Emergency Committee met 27/4 and upped the influenza pandemic alert from level 3 to Level 4 (human to human transmission):-

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/statements/2009/h1n1_20090427/en/index.html

The Scottish case had visited an affected area of Mexico. They live in Falkirk Area. Today, the Central Scotland Strategic Co-ordinating Group has been activated so that the various partner bodies in the area - local authorities, police, fire, ambulance and other services - can present an effective response to this challenge.

UK Governments have advised against travelling to Mexico. Mexico is implementing closure of public places (pubs, cinemas) to limit potential for new infections.

OIE confirms that it is not an animal virus, nor is it in swine population, and in line with previous cases of human flu pandemics, which were named after the place it broke out, for example Spanish Flu, Asian Flu etc., and suggests it should be called 'North-American Flu'.

and confirmed in Spain so don't think it'll be long before racing is stopped again being related to bird flu!

i doubt this will affect racing mate, very much hope not aswell, bird flu is still around, but its old news now the public arnt interested after 2 weeks, so they move on to other scaremongering news that people want to here! thats how they sell newspapers!
