jimmy white Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 what a fanastic light hearted, [but true ] thread, ;D, i remember many of these happy things, cycling, with a" made up bike" from bits and bobs [no brakes, too dear ;D] to the railway station at esk bank, having the cardboard box[no basket ;D] weighed [with left foot under scales ;D,,cheaper ;D [off course the station master new, but would let us away with it ;D, 10 miles in all all these past posts have def brought back some great memories ,,,,,,memories which are all safe, tucked up in the mind ;D im sure ch pd and roland wont mind me digging this one out,, all are so true, so vivid in the mind a blessing. we met and married a long time ago we worked for long hours, when wages were low no tv, no wireless, no bath, times were hard just a cold water tap and a walk down the yard no holidays abroad, no carpets on floors we had coal burning fires, and didnt lock doors our children arrived, no pill in those days and they were brought up, without state aids they were safe to go out and play in the park and folks could go out and walk in the dark no valium, no drugs no lsd we cured most of our ills, with a good cup of tea no vandals , no muggings, there was nothing to rob, we felt we were rich, with a couple of bob people were happier in those bygone days more kinder and caring, in so many ways milkman and paperboy would whistle and sing a night at the pictures was like a mad fling we got our share of struggle and strife we just had to face it as a pattern of life and now im alone, i look back those years but i dont think of bad times, trouble and tears i remember the blessings, our home and our love and that we shared them together,,,,,,,,,,i thank god above
Guest kev d Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 remember making gokarts with bits of wood and pram wheels with some rope for steering great fun , playing british bulldog with all your mates , remember whip and tops where you had to whip the bobbing to keep it spinning . and sharing a bed with your brother with coats instead of blankets and waking up with frost inside of the windows , oh happy days , kids today dont know there born
Guest Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 I remember falling over and the milkman brought me home only to get bitten by my ever protective dog gawdd i loved that dog) . The milkman just said it was his own fault for coming in the garden. Nawadays the dog would have to be put down and there would be a compensation claim lol
jimmy white Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 i remember being [forced by dad ;D] into the" boys brigade", all the boys brigade marching down the main road,,, all mums dads watching on proudly,, mum saying dad" look at our james" ,,,,,,,,hes the only one in step ;D ;D ;D ;D used to see the village pipe band [great site] playing and marching down the main rd.,,,, no pipe band now,, no village now ,, same as the sally am,[salvation army] ,, never see them marching with their band down the main rd ,, poor oots [scottish custom at weddings[ pour outs] when all the guests at the wedding through all their loose change [usually pennies] for all the kids to grab ,, they hardly even marry now ;D let alone throw out cash ;D

Guest Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 I was born in 1952, remember going to grans and uncle and aunts jiving to Jerry Lee Lewis, my fav song at the time was Bee Bop a luna she's my baby. Very little traffic. Going to bed after the Archers when it finished at 7. The old tramlines, the iron bridge in Merthyr. Rats down the gully, everyone poor, everyone knew everything about everyone. In the street people would be popping in and out for a loan of some sugar or butter. Playing cricket in the street and hitting the ball through someone’s window and all of us scarpering, being found out and having a damned good hiding not for breaking the window but for running away and not owning up. Watching Alun Clark in 1962 aged 10 driving the landrover from his dad's shop to their small holding and then home (past the local bobby!). Seeing an 8 yo friend drown when he climbed over the wall and into the outdoor swimming pool. Learning to play football with a lump of leather. Getting my first dog at the age of 6 for my birthday from my auntie Cora and Uncle Dilwyn, my mother didn't want it. They were sure it was a dog, oh yes, we called him Butch........ He had 5 litters of 7 pups ;D ;D ;D. The tin bath makes me cringe now, we had no hot water (toilet out the back), used to boil three buckets of water. Family bath was Friday night, I had to get in first, the bloody grit used to give me the colly wobbles ;D just like cotton wool. Then off to bed and my mother and father's turn. Proper bonfire nights lots of us from the same class, baked potatoes in the bonfire, cold frosty November 5ths. Passing my 11 plus and going to grammar school the first in my family!!! The greatest winter in my lifetime 1963, no school for weeks. 12' bamboo sticks being used at Penganddu, to look for stranded cars, Snow drifts at Dowlais Top higher then steam locos, tobogganing down the side of Caeracca on the bog, hitting stones protruding and taking off. Hanging off the school wall and dropping 12/14’ as 8 yo, we was hard. Summer holidays of 63 me and Paul Tambling having our first interest with girls, kissing them behind the garage only to be caught by my father and told to get home sharpish, I was so embarrassed so guilty; bet he was laughing his head off! Went everywhere on my bike, not much traffic, mainly buses. Fantastic railway lines, the Merthyr Brecon line absolutely beautiful run, Dowlais to Ponsticill under the Pant tunnel. School trip in last two years of primary to Bristol Zoo, all the primary schools in Merthyr went on the same chartered train. Street fights, fist fights, nowt else once someone went down that was the end. Bank managers who asked how much can you afford to pay, aye that will be ok then!!! Always remember Teacher Bessy, incredible how he was accepted in the community in the 50’s a hard Iron & steel coal community. He had been in the Theatre in London I believe for many years. He had come back to Dowlais in his 50’s and was employed as the road sweeper; he used to wear makeup and women’s clothes sometimes. Being poor but didn’t need anything just food on the table, no telly until 62, listen to the ‘wireless’, still refer to it as that to my son’s amusement. Out on my bike no fear playing football in the winter and cricket in the summer and then went I went to Grammar playing Rugby. The awe at seeing the Heads of the Valley road being built by Christiani Shand. Going to the cinema at 6 being smuggled in by my mum so she could see the latest x rated horror, something about a mummy. Going to the old vic cinema at the bottom of south street in Dowlais, to watch superman I was about 8(?) Never been there before, bats flying around above our heads as we watched!!! Chipmunk crisps from Ferrari’s caf. Steam pie at the station caf in Merthyr. Train ride down to Ponty market on a Saturday, in one of the indoor market cafs, faggots and peas loads of salt and vinegar and then apple pie and custard for afters what a treat! Watching Merthyr Tydfil at Penydarren Park; my hero goalkeeper, near the end of his career... Graham Vearnacombe. And of course Aberfan, 6 miles further down our valley. I was in school as normal that day, it was lunch time we were playing footie in the yard, Keith Smart had been home for his lunch, he walked back in the yard and laughing said guess what a tip has fallen on a school down the valley, he and we had no idea at that moment the horror of what happened. That night I saw miner’s coming home and their wives running to them and crying in each other’s arms, I had never seen miner’s crying before. The school was Pantglas and they had been the champion primary and secondary modern school in Merthyr up to then in my time. And of course all the things I’ve forgotten before I was 11!!!
