Guest Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 So if it's a cock are you not sending it then? ;Dif i put ring on the cock it would go,had a good performance before from a young hen feeding a big youngster having taken cock away ,and was hoping for a similar performance this time .just trying to increase the odds in my favour andy.
Guest Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Douglas McClary's book "pigeons for everyone" has an excelent chapter on colour pairings, although not always correct and having no reference to the colours black and white it is excelent as a rough guide and the whole book in general is very good. The problem with predicting colour is that unntil you have several generationns in your loft you won't actually know what colours make up the ancestory of your birds annd even when you do there can still be unexpected throw backs from many generations ago.Colour genetics is a science in itself and I have several fancier friends who are completely absorbed in the subject and it can get very complicated not just through colour but by pattern too,ie T pattern, bars etc etc.Colour and pattern in pigeons is a truly fascinating subject.

Roland Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Had a Mealy x Cheq Pied that threw Grizzles. One Red and One Black ( Cheq mealy perhap). Both Birds were gifted. Unfortunately the two nests of their youngsters died. I got shot of the parents too of course. Real shame too, as they were great looking and me being partial to Grizzles, especially Reds....
REDCHEQHEN Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 if sire is red i think red youngster's will be hens (evil) wrong (evil) but never mind have a pair of youngbirds in the nest ,one a red chec the other a blue ,was looking for an indication as to sex of each ? sire is red chec , dam is a blue . thanks in advance . andy. has the young red one got black splashes on it? I have the same pairing - sire red cheq dam blue bar one red one and one blue bar in the nest the red one is smaller than the blue - but the red one has black splashes - which usually - but not always indicates that it is a cock its easier when the pairings are the other way round - ie dam - red cheq, sire: blue - as the reds/mealies are cocks - but it could be either when its the other way round
Guest Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 I always believed in the genetic colour matching. BUT last year I had a red in the nest from a bl and ch, must have been tread by a different cock , but only bl & ch in my stock loft, all prisoners????Now how can that be????? :-/ :-/ ??)

Not to be a downer roland, but i heard that normal colours throughing grizzles, is a sign of carriers of paratyphoid, heard this many years ago when i had a cheq x a blue throw a chequer grizzle, the following year i did catch the dreaded disease and it started in the section those birds where kept, coincidence could be,
Guest Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 ;Dupdate ,this young pair just weaned ,red che has a few pencil marks on two flights and is a cock i am sure ,the blue ? well time will tell ;D ;D andy.
