Guest VINNIE Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 hi all i was thinking the other night (no it didnt hurt ) about the fanciers around the country when getting to a certain age have to give up their birds due to the fact they can no longer cope with them and even have to go into sheltered housing but what if there was maybe a sheltered housing scheme for ex fanciers who not only can they get maybe homecare and a safe place to live but can also get to still be involved in pigeon racing ie a 1 loft race on site each year ,maybe the rpra could put some of our money into it as many fanciers have paid many years to them may be a silly idea to some but may give quality of life to some others i remember a member when giving his birds up died 2 months later in a home lots of members said the birds kepted him going but without them he just gave up just think of all the experence under one roof, they could run a one loft race with a loft manager but they run it with advice, just an idea as i think it is just as important to keep the older members in the sport as well as getting new blood into the sport a big idea that may not happen but would be a worthwhile one for others ,what do you the members think how would you feel if you had to give up your birds in this situation ,good luck to all in your youngbird racing cheers vinnie
andrecrock Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 Altough i am only 26 i think its a cracking idee....well thats the way i would like to see my last days out.Unless the misses pop me of before my time ;D
pjc Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 its a great idea, the RPRA could use blackpool income to purchase land with outline planning etc for say 10 bungalows then build to suit complete with a loft suitable for wheelchair access etc. Once built along with a warden fanciers could put themselves on a waiting list. If it was run as private home then the income would build up into a fund to purchase more land etc etc to set up around the country.
blaz Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 good idea i have 4 club members that i could move in right away ;D ;D ;D then again how much arguing as we all have different ideas how to fly or birds
Guest Owen Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 Great idea. It is something like they do at Spring Hill, Florida, USA. I would guess that the Gulf Racing Pigeon Club is the most competitive in the World. Races are won and lost there in fractions of a second. It is possibly a little differant from what you have in mind, but the common factor is that Fanciers from all over the USA retire to there puposely to fly their birds.
Guest Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 What a fantastic idea, as an ex Senior Care Assistant who used to visit the elderley in their own homes i can guarantee 100% that this idea would work. Apart from my visits some of them never saw a soul from one day to another. Can you imagine the amount of knowledge they would collectively have ? I can picuture it now "100 year old tops the National". If this idea took off i for one would love to work there, i love the elderley and i love pigeons. What an ideal job !!! :)

Pigeon Widow, who did you work for Local Authority or Private?
Guest Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 I worked for Sue Ryder Care. I worked my way up from Care Assistant to Senior Care and eventually finishing of as Assesment Officer . It was my resposibility to assess the client in his/her home before the Carers started to go in.

I know the charity well and what your job entailed which is why I know you'll see that this idea has legs if done right.
Guest Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 Vinnie you are a mind of useful ideas, and as always have others less fortunate than most at the forefront of your thoughts. I would love to see this idea get off the ground, and wouldn't it be even better if any sort of complex were to have it's own loft in the grounds so these people who have spent a lifetime with pigeons could still see the birds on daily exercise and returning from racing. Can only imagine the joy these people would have in their twilight years. Even better if every region were to have one so these people would not be too far away from their family and friends. Maybe a pipe dream, but knowing the hospitality of the pigeon fraternity, there is no reason why this shouldn't become a reality.
Guest Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 6 hours later and i'm still thinking what a fantastic idea Wish i had the money to go ahead, the ideas buzzing round my head are never ending lol
bluewhiteflight Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 i might try and geyt the mother in law instrested in pigeons so she could move out
Guest Owen Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 I am sure the money could be found throught he lottery grants. And of course the dear old RPRA. They give a lot of money away every year so it could be argued that it would be better to look after out own. There is a school in America where they were having trouble with Native American Kids. All the usual problems plus of course the bitterness that had come from being a minority. A Teacher introduced pigeons as a project and set up a racing loft. According to what I have read it has been a great success. Just another thought to look at. If anyone is interested, I will look up the details so that we can take it further.
frank-123 Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 what about a lunatic asylum for pigeon fanciers of course we would need internet access to keep us up to date with the other lunatics on pigeonbasics on a serious side its a great idea
Guest bigda Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 idea OK, but what about the pensioner, what happens when he is not so fit to attend to his birds dose he get the heave ho from the sheltered home, what happens should he fall and split his head who dose he claim, what if they all become bed ridden where do they go to another temporary home will it be a private home or a NHS home then you have the in house fighting to contend with the discrimination all sorts of social problems hard going
Guest Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 6 hours later and i'm still thinking what a fantastic idea Wish i had the money to go ahead, the ideas buzzing round my head are never ending lol It is a fantastic idea that's why and I don't blame you having ideas buzzing about, sure your going to get negatives thrown at this whole idea but being in that industry you'll know that there's pretty much nothing you'll come across that you can't overcome. Look forward to seeing where this one goes.
Guest bigda Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 if its that good an idea why dose the fancier not go and take the old boys out down to there lofts to watch the birds come home, and let them potter about at there lofts, then drop them off after racing save them from upping sticks, and jargre you with all the knowledge of old folk homes you own, or owned, could taxi them all about, as you would know how to handle the situation very well
Guest bigda Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 My family run nursing homes and in-house care around the country for the elderly and infirm, the idea has definate potential. Pigeon Widow, who did you work for Local Authority or Private? have these homes got a phone number and a name as in case of enquirers :-/as it sound to good to be true
pjc Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 If it was to happen it would be fantastic, funding to set it up should and could come from the RPRA/Blackpool etc but the running of it should be totaly independent of the RPRA. Best solution to me would be groups of say 10 bungalows with a warden and able bodied fancier at each location. One loft at each location run buy the able bodied fancier but open for the pensioners to participate and assist. This way they would be able to get enjoyment from the birds without the worry of being able to or having to care for them etc.
