Leroy Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 can anyone recommend who to contact to have droppings tested and how long it normally takes to get a result please??? I am in the north west if that makes a difference Lee
Guest bakes Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 me mate has used pigeon health diagnostic service number 01206 842221 they check for worms, coccy, canker, crop swab all the best.
greenlands Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 (He is Cheap honest) .He'll take droppings through the post or if you live close enough to him give him a visit ,ask how much then if it's not to your liking just forget about it.He deals mostly in herbs and there's one that I use regular Bitter Stimulant Powder.. Give him a ring and have a crack with him,he's a good pigeon man as well. Gary Spavin. Ashbourne House. Aldrens Lane. Skerton. Lancaster. LancsLA1 2DT. Tel: 01524 381414. Good luck mate. Lindsay C.
Guest Davy Fleming Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 Gary Spavin is top class mate and knows what he is talking about. Only takes £2 per bird plus any traetment you may need with the result there and then as the lad says try it and make up your own mind been going to him for years and never ever regretted it ;)
kev01293 Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 pigeon health are cheap but whenever i send samples away they always come back with a bacterial infection and i know of other fanciers who have had the same results? they are fast and polite but next time im gonna try somebody else just to see what comes back? kev
Guest Davy Fleming Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 Go to Gary, he won't tell any old cobblers, (and not suggesting anyone else is) as straight as they come , will also show you on screen what is wrong as he tests them and if you to listen to him you will get an education. So let's know how you get on if you go mate, good luck ;)
Leroy Posted August 20, 2009 Author Report Posted August 20, 2009 thanks for the replies guys and gals, have a couple of choices, will let you know how it all goes, if i dont lose the bird in the meantime!

Leroy Posted August 21, 2009 Author Report Posted August 21, 2009 went to see Gary Spavin today as he was the nearest to me so I could visit him with the birds which made it quicker to find out if there was anything wrong. Whilst the diagnosis isn't good for the sick YB, Gary has put my mind at ease as far as the others are all concerned so far. droppings have been left overnight. will update once I have spoken to him. thanks for the recommendations Lee

Guest surfer Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 same happened to me a my freinds :-/ I used them this year same result, droppings good but swab showed slight bacterial infection.
robbiedoo. Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 i got the same slight bacterial infection when i told one of my club mates he said they always tell you that .
holmsidelofts Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 i got the same slight bacterial infection when i told one of my club mates he said they always tell you that . Thing is bacteria will always be present in most samples. that doesnt mean there is an issue, it will pick up good bacteria as well as bad, the only way to tell what the bacteria is is to grow cultures in a lab which is not a simple process.
Guest Owen Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 I test my own droppings. And I find it best for me to check once or twice a week. I always see bacterial activity in the droppings and obviously it has to be there. The problem starts if I see e-coli. Then it is time to worry. When the general bacteria activity goes very high, I consider that to be a warning sign that things can get nasty if I don't act straight away. The other problem I used to find caused me no end of trouble was yeast. But both these conditions can be treated as long as they are picked up early. Cocci goes up and down all the time. After racing it usually goes up quite high but later in the week after the birds have recuperated it will go back down on it's own. I don't think we can afford to accept any cocci in racing birds so I will always treat it while the racing is going on. In practice it is usually every other week. Mostly when I check other people's droppings, I find worms, high levels of cocci and sometimes canker. When respiritory problems show up, it is usually from lofts with too many birds or else poor ventilation. I can honestly say that I have never found respiritory problems in birds from the best flyers. I have learnt that the lofts have a very big influence on the health of the birds and obviously the results. These days I rarely use stains to check for bacterial activity in the throat because if the birds get this condition it is due to poor management and after correcting the loft ventilation the condition will eventually rectify itself. The problem in useing the services of Labs and Vets is the cost of doing it correctly. This is because after treating the birds a second check should be made. Just this year a guy had his test and we found both hair and round worm. After treatment the round worm had gone but it took another two treatments to get rid of the hair worm. If the guy had not got me to do the second check he would never have known about the failure of the first treatment.

All I can say is that Gary is man who sounds like he knows his stuff, talks alot of sense and was very patient with me and my questions.
edwards Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 folks once the bactira is kept away your birds will perform
