Hi all,

This might be a daft question but would it be too late to start sitting in with my young birds? They don't listen to me at all and I am getting nowhere fast it seems. I tried to teach them to come to the whistle but then I lost the whistle and cant do it loud enough to make them hear me all the time.

So I am thinking that sitting with them should tame them up a bit but ..is it too late?

They are flying well and getting close to roaming so are they gonna be too old to respond?

In short can you teach a young(ish) bird new tricks?

Thanks for any and all advice.

mate i say your problem is over feeding the corn needs to be measured right for young birds also get them to eat peanuts not to many mind one per bird how much u feeding them go into the loft late in the evening u can get closer to the birds as they don't like flying off there perch late in the eveing at feed them a peanut on there perch do this for a week or two and it should make them a little tamer id say your main problem is over feeding i play with the youngsters in the nest that way in the young bird loft they are already really used too u

when you are feeding them, dont just throw the corn into them and go out....sit in with them and talk to them, i sit on the floor and after a while they start to peck at your trousers and start to sit on your knee/leg.....also after a while if you have a bit of corn in your hand they will start to peck at your hand and take the corn, like j.a.m. says, peanuts are good for getting them tame.  :)

all this takes time so be prepared to sit in with them every day...... :)

  (peanuts 75 pence from asda......)

well it can be tricky, the thing is from weaning we feed the same time every day so they know when to expect grub also you have to speak to them and rattle the tub, they soon get to know you are food, dinna feed too much peanuts, theylle get fat n wont fly far, we dont make a habit of catching oor young birds cause theres no need to with ets so its gointo be a nightmare for wing stampin, we give a light feed of charbohydrate before flyin and a protein feed for trapping,ie, main meal, hope it helps davie.

ps, reread your post , ration feed for a couple of days and they willsoon listen and come down for feed time, routine s everything, same time all the time , it works foxes.
