Guest Owen Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 I have pictures of them. I have seen 6 legs on a lamb. I think Nature will throw every sort of freak at us from time to time. Both in humans and in animals. According to what I have read, Nature produces variations all the time, most of which die or are taken by the preditors. Once now and again a sport is born that has a benefit that makes it better than it's fellows. And then a new branch of the original genotype develops. These sports are reccessive, and require another individiual with similar genes to mate with if the benefit is to become part of future generations. In Nature, finding another with similar genes is not usually a problem because the new development will ensure that others will survive. And gradually the new benefit will become part of the genotype of all the individuals in the new strain. We animal breeders are trying to do something like it, when we seek to enhance certain characters in our pigeons. If we are lucky, we will find something in one our birds that gives them an edge in competition. And assuming that we recognise the new devopement, we have the raw material to improve the birds we breed in the future. That is why animal breeders must inbreed to consolidate any improvements they make. And that is why we need to continually cross our birds until something good shows up. Crossbreeding finds the sports and inbreeding consolidates what we have found. Easy to write but very difficult to do.
showman Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 In fact every pigeon has technically got 4 wings !! Paul.
