I use farm wheat. £5 per sack. The birds love this crop compared to the last one.  :-/

A good time of year to be feeding nearly 100% barley gets the fat off them ready for breeding, but I also feed it all through the year at a lesser %.

One has to be careful here regards wieght etc. I like wheat mixed with barley. A little linseed every other day first. This weather one really should also be ading a little high carbs for heating them up and combatting the cold.

Now if the birds lack, as barley has some propeties lacking, specially in quantity, they will oer eat / gorge themselves on it given the chance.

One needs to look at the Grain tables to see what they entail like.

A few years ago I bought 4 bags of barley from a man with a lorry outside a local show. It look good and it was a nice price. I was encouraged by the fact that a lot of people were buying it.

Later, after I got it home and stored it in my bin, I dipped my scope into it to have proper look. Mice droppings. Not a couple but loads of mice droppings. Boy, was I glad that I had not chewed it. If I could have traced the Guy I reckon he would have suffered with a twisted neck. I dumped the lot over the tip. It turned out to be very expensive grain.

I think with Barley there seems to be a few points to remember.. firstly its got to be of very good quality, secondly i think the doos have to have their last flight at least half way up before introducing too much.. as the doos still need energy to moult. And lastly i wouldn't feed anymore than 50% as on cold night etc.. the doos need some energy to burn to keep them warm..
