Guest Mav Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 I`ve got a problem!. I found this site just after starting to keep garden doves. I purchased a small, cheap 2 hole Dovecote which has turned into an expensive 6 hole Dovecote. Then i was thinking maybe i can earn a few quid to subsidies a truckers wage and enjoy keeping birds too. While looking for white birds and thinking about going into white bird release i have now purchased a new garden shed of fair quality to use as a loft for the white birds. I have found an old good friend who i have known for a few years that lives just around the corner who's been keeping and racing pigeons for 50 years. So here's my problem, I am getting that i am close to becoming a racing fan, Do i get into racing or do i say with bird release, OR can i enjoy BOTH?.
rasbull Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 No reason why you cant enjoy the both! Good on you, give it a try!
pigeonpete Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 You dont know what your missing with the racing!!! why not give it a try? you dont have to race every week, just when it suits if you want, And you can still do the release business aswell no problems. You will get all the help and advise of this great site :-)
pjc Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 no reason why you can't do both or do your bird release and race with your old friend.
Guest Mav Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 No reason why you cant enjoy the both! Good on you, give it a try! Thanks Rasbull, Would i have to get rid of the garden doves, Lock them up and/or just put them out of sight?. Would they be a distraction?. Could i home them together in a partition loft? and let them out at different times. Mav.
Guest strapper Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 keep them apart but they wont harm each other. have your own area for your doves and the same for the pigeons..which would be on a larger scale.
Guest Mav Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 You will get all the help and advise of this great site :-) Thanks Pigeonpete, I have already chatted to some great folk, I have had the offer from complete strangers to have a ride out to a pigeon show, (Which i could not make at the time) Had an offer of free white birds and also offers and invites for me to go to other peoples homes and gardens to see birds and lofts. Thanks to you all for making me more than welcome.
blackdog Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 welcome mav, go for it mate, its a great sport, you wont regret it
Guest Mav Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Thanks Strapper, I have a another old shed which is in good condition that could be converted, Maybe a good idea for the future. Meanwhile i better keep reading what you experienced people have to say on here and carry on learning.

You will never stop learning, there is always something new to learn, such is the fascination of this hobby. The day you stop learning is the day your success starts to decline

chrissy Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 no reason why you can't do both or do your bird release and race with your old friend. Exactly and some people do very well racing white pigeons
Guest bakes Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 only you can make the dissition but if it was me would pick raceing everytime theres not a buzz close to it seeing your birds arrive back from 100's of miles away the laugh you have up the club and the excitement waiting to find out were you have finished in the club and fed up to you what you disside but raceing for me everytime, all the best.

Hi Spen, Big county Lincolnshire, In fact not sure if its about the 2nd or 3rd biggest, So if there only 3 there's room for some competition. Yet good idea about having a few whites in my team, Could i keep all whites?. Mav.

Guest frank dooman Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 have a go at both just dont let the doves cross breed with the white racers mind you it could be a winner in a tesco race with the big fan tail ;)

Mav. hi mav, yeah course you could keep a team of all whites, but you won't cos youv'e already got the bug mate n it won't let ya lol.whatever you decide i wish you good luck mav, enjoy your birds.
peterpau Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Them whites I put on here have got to race eventualy. At the min I am in two clubs only Brittish Barcelona and Brittish International Championssip Club. They have to fly.
bluey Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 For 'dove release' any white birds will do the job. If you have good quality white racers they will do the 'dove release' job and get training at the same time.
Guest Mav Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Just got home from work. There's some great comments and ideas in this thread for me to consider. Thanks everyone for the input. (plus PM`s). Long way to go whatever happens. Mav.
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 get your self some decent whites from the start mav then what ever you decide you will have the tools to do the job i think you could do both and enjoy it
