micko and jack Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 CHAIRDE FRIENDS a question on a pigeon bath we put about 75 mm (3 inches) of water (heated) in how much water do you put in the bath in this cold weather how often do you put the bath out i used to have it out everday would it do the pigeons any harm to get a good soaking in this cold weather
Tony C Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 About 6 inches deep here. Ideally put the bath out for them 2-3 times a week, if it were detrimental to their health they wouldn't get in it, let them be the judge Micko.
Guest Jargre- Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 CHAIRDE FRIENDS a question on a pigeon bath we put about 75 mm (3 inches) of water (heated) in how much water do you put in the bath in this cold weather how often do you put the bath out i used to have it out everday would it do the pigeons any harm to get a good soaking in this cold weather I use cat litter trays as baths and give 3-4 inches of water and they love it, It can be a problem if the weather is too cold because it can reduce the core temperature of the birds from the feet and legs up and cause them to get dehydrated, you'd not think it but its true. Watch a bird shiver after a bath, that's them trying to increase their core temperature. Once a week is fine and don't make the water hot but rather tepid, (luke warm) at best, the birds will still love it. They'll shake most of it off but its the water on the legs (can even freeeze) if very cold causing them to lose heat and cool down quickly so don't give them every day until it warms up a little. A trick I use to help raise up the birds temperature after a bath is some sweet warm water, that works a treat for me.
gulkie Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 hi mick i find once a week is enought but its up to u put it out every day if u like ,the birds will only take a bath when they feel like it. hav not forgot that little message, have been very busy. take care m8 rgards to jack and nadine. wullie
REDROCKET Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 ours get the bath as often as possible which at the moment is 2 to 3 times a week and basically there bathed in anything from an upside down dustbin lid to a cats litter tray roughly about 2"deep
Roland Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Yep, they will bath in anything, even a puddle on the flat roof or floor. Never ever bothered to heat the water meselfs like. Seen them bath in water with ice in / around. Can't see how it cn harm them.
greenlands Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 I like them to have a bath in the morning, gives them chance to dry out, preferably on a sunny day,but that's for my benifit, won't leave them on there own. They bath in an old sconce ,it's 36" x 20" x 2"deep.A drop of condis in the water to keep the nasties away.
