I am taking early retirement in the next 3 years, I was pricing things up like loft, clock, equipment, purchasing y/b

As I don't have room for a stock loft, the total cost comes to around £3,000. How do young people afford to join the sport these days.

What I have also noticed that there is no control over prices, example, an ets clock I looked at over Christmas!

Come January up it went by £50.00 for no reason. What I have seen is a lot of places seem to charge what they

Like which I find is disappointing.

I think the vast majority are feeling the pinch at the moment and sadly I can't see an end to it in this hobby. In a ideal world we would all like everything brand new and the latest of everything. I am sure if you made do with second hand things and replace with new as and when you can afford them it would be easier for your pocket. Also plenty of good fanciers on here who would be only to pleased to help you out with birds etc. Good luck and look forward to you getting back in the hobby. ;)

maybe your setting your standards to high , a 1000 pound will get you started

loft or shed second hand   350 , t3  clock 100, crates around 25 each , plenty of good yb,s around at 20 a piece , two or three drinkers set you back about 40 quid .

  then build up from there

it might help if put your location up, as members might know someone near you who are selling a loft, baskets etc.

Youll best bet is have a budget and stick to it. I agree that £1000 should get you started quite easily, and possibly even less that that. No need for a new shed ETS top birds etc, and if you do want these then you will have to pay. My father in law was very "careful"  ;D  with his money, he converted garden sheds he had, bought an STB for £80 and six stock birds from Louella for £150, and then won his first ever race, the YB averages that season and on average 6 x 1sts per year (OB only) in a tough club. Is as much about what your willing to put compared to what your going to spend.

Yes it can be expensive to start up, But yes you can get second had lofts, baskets, clock etc pretty cheap, And some of the best birds i have had have been given me or cheap! the birds i paid 100s for well!!!

As for being to expensive for kids to start up!! i disagree. Kids get xbox and ps3s bought for them, go and watch football every saturday, Get designer trainers/football boots bought for them. (my 11 year old just skinned me for £50 for new footie boots)

Kids these days just want everything done for them, and (guilty) get most things to easy.

so if 1 or 2 do mention getting pigeons to their parents, And realise what dedication and work would be involved. No thanks!!!

Sad but true, My son is keen as at the moment, but will it last, he goes high school september, He tells his mates he keeps pigeons, And they will say thats "gay" as they do! And because they all follow the crowd at that age (well most) then will he want to be  be waiting for pigeons on a saturday with his dad?? or be playing footie with his mates or sitting on his ass all day, playing on his xbox?? I know which 1 im hoping for, But can see the other option winning through  ;) Just my thoughts :-)

But mealy will gladly help ypu out with some birds when u start up again mate :-)

Totaly agree with the way prices are going! Why don't the unions become the agents for electronic equiptment selling to it membership for near cost?

The manufacturers would be making there profit but members wouldn't be linning agents pockets?

Old buildings being demolitioned meand good seasond wood / bricks - you clean -air vents etc. going for a song. Litterually a few quiddies. Far better that this quick 'Kiln' dried stuff as well! :-/

Biuld your own.

Used plastic cladding over a good framework. Likewise removable air vents.... I swap for the cladding to control air flow - tempreture etc.

Plastic cladding comes out at £7 -8 for a 5 metre x a foot. Quickly screwed/ bolted and so very eay to cut.

Glue easy as well... like the corner ends covers etc.

My one door, a sliding one id just plastic air vents on a light frame.

Easy cleaned and rot proof. etc. etc. With stands any weather of course.

Downsides are .....  :-/ :o ..................  8)
