me Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Wonder who is behind this story- "killer owl", "kills native birds" etc presume peregrines and sparrowhawks are not "killers" and don't kill native birds. How many dogs or deer have been taken by eagle owls recently and if it comes to that how many footpaths have been closed recently because of seagull attacks. Mon the Eagle Owls!!!

Merlin Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Go forth and multiply,ya beauty P.S watch out for those R.S.P.B (Bird Lovers)
OLDYELLOW Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 i think the R.S.P.B lovers be too much of a meal for them lol
invalidusername Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Plenty of pro-owl/anti RSPB comments under the story too :-)
Guest shadow Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 you can bet the ifo provided about it attacking dogs and deer came from the rspb they hate the idea of this bird flying wild
Bluedoo Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Footpath closed...no prying eyes. Bird disappears...footpath reopens. Who is watching the RSPB. I wonder how many people have actually come forward complaining their dogs were attacked. Seem to recall an eagle owl getting shot last year once it was inferred it was not a "native".
Merlin Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Comments Board available, asking public to comment,we are also the public, make valid points, get in to the public arena.
Bluedoo Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 From the news story: "A public right of way through a woodland in Cornwall recently had to be closed when an eagle owl began attacking dogs being walked in the area." I always thought they were moorland/open area birds. A bird that size wouldn't be manouverable enough to hunt in woodland. I've watched buzzards in woodland, they would be pushed to catch a cold. Please correct me if I am wrong.
BLACK W F Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 if this is true that they like to eat Percy and sparrow hks then its about time we started to raise cash for to introduce as many as possable into the wild fight fire with fire its the only way we are ever going to get any justice and its about time we started to protect our birds and give them a chance whats you guys thoughts
DOVEScot Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Pigeon governing bodies should provide a 24/7 watch on any nest sites, run by volunteers or paid staff, this would have to be a sporsored group or sub section, funds levied on members and donations from the public PR would have to be to restore a natural inhabitant of the uk and not as a hawk/fakon killer, play the RSPB at their own game, do you think they would get all the support they do if they advertised the sparrow hawk as a song bird killer :-/ Raise legal action against anyone that even threatens a nest site or owl TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE PUBLICITY, QUESTION IT Feathers were ruffled in Bristol yesterday when a killer owl was spotted. ALL OWLS ARE KILLERS, SAME AS HAWKS, FALCONS, CROWS, MAGPIES, SEAGULS, AND OSPREYS Perched on a balcony in rainy Clifton, the eagle owl hardly looked threatening as it surveyed the city. BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT The bird was spotted at 10am yesterday morning by eagle-eyed Bristol writer Richard Hope-Hawkins. It was later spotted sitting on the railings in Victoria Square, Clifton, Bristol. Mr Hope-Hawkins said: "Although rather wet, the owl looked alert and contented and was a wonderful surprise to anyone passing by." GET THE PUBLIC TO SEE HOW WONDERFUL THEY ARE The eagle owl can grow to 3ft tall. Eagle owls are sometimes known as killer owls. They can attack dogs and even deer. YES SMALL DOGS AND DEER, SO DOES GOLDEN EAGLES YET THEY ARE WELCOME AND PROTECTED A public right of way through a woodland in Cornwall recently had to be closed when an eagle owl began attacking dogs being walked in the area. There is also concern that the owls can cut native bird populations. YES TO MANAGABLE NUMBERS NOT DECIMATE THEM AS THE HAWKS ARE DOING TO SONG BIRDS Cris Sperring of the Hawk and Owl Trust said that the owl had been spotted in Bristol before and would be difficult to catch. CONTACT THIS GUY AND ASK HIS ADVICE, FIND OUT IF HE IS FOR OR AGAINST THEM
swilcox Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 I wondered where eddy the eagle went, someone must have left the door open??
Merlin Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Well done DOVEScot, very good and factual peice of insight, and good advicegiven, now its down to ALL fanciers and indeed all BIRD lovers
DOVEScot Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Over 3000 supposed members and very little responce to this, this could be a great chance to air our sensible views on a public domain regarding hawks and falcons and the need for eagle owls to balance the food chain and the RSPB's over protection of them and the devistation to the song birds, public are a lot more sympathetic to them than pigeons, sad but true :-/ http://www.westerndailypress.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=145809&command=displayContent&sourceNode=145792&contentPK=21055614&moduleName=InternalSearch&formname=sidebarsearch#continueNews

Firms HAVE done a good job there. Also they feed the Tits etc. in the back garden and trip over Ferals in the street. Like I keep harping on about 'We need a PR Firm too.

Like I keep harping on about 'We need a PR Firm too. Future survival is all down to PR and promoting your sport/pastime at every opertunity, the RSPB have got well organised one. As soon as any bird topic is unveiled the media contact them and they are right on the job getting their oar in first "KILLER OWLS ATTACKING DOGS ON A PUBLIC FOOTPATH" Joe public hardly going to cause any fuss it dissapears :-/
REDCHEQHEN Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 This has been at the bottom of my garden all morning - will it leave my pigeons alone?
Guest ljb107 Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 Nope, its a sparrow hawk, it will kill your pigeons. Lloyd
OLDYELLOW Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 wonder if there's an eagle owl hire in your area
Guest 67ghirl Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 We have a Cd with recordings of an eagle owl even the sound of them is supposed to deter other Birds of Prey! Haven't managed to use it yet, need to treat the other half to a portable cd player Does any one else have any experience using this?
