Anger as peregrine falcons poisoned in Cumbria

The persecution of peregrine falcons in Cumbria has been highlighted as conservationists demand more protection for the bird of prey.

Pigeons – thought to be smeared in poison – have been found tethered to the ground near a peregrine site in the county.

The Cumbrian discovery is among dozens of cases nationally of the birds being poisoned, trapped and shot, or chicks being taken from nests.

RSPB experts say 2009 has been one of the worst years on record for the falcons being targeted.

Conservationists have called on the Government to add them to the list of species prioritised in efforts to tackle wildlife crime.

There have been more than 50 reports of crimes against the protected birds of prey already this year compared to 79 for the whole of 2007.

RSPB investigations officer Mark Thomas said: “It has been a terrible year, one of the worst I can remember. In the last few weeks barely a day has gone by without a call about peregrine persecution.

“These crimes are cruel, needless and selfish. That they happen in the 21st century is a disgrace.

“Peregrines have taken 30 years to recover from the devastating effects of pesticide poisoning and still we find them targeted by people who hold a grudge against them.â€

The RSPB points the finger at “rogue elements†within the pigeon racing and game shooting communities who blame peregrines for the loss of birds.

The conservation charity also blamed criminals intent on illegally taking eggs and chicks to be used in falconry.

Earlier this montha police investigation was launched after a pigeon laced with poison was found dead in Salterhall Quarry, near Rowrah, Frizington

Officers suspected the bird had been left in the quarry to attract and poison peregrine falcons.

And in Dumfries and Galloway yesterday people were urged to be vigilant for birds of prey during the summer.

They have been successfully breeding in the region and police said the birds and their eggs can be valuable and attractive commodities.

Numbers of peregrines, whose hunting dive of well over 100mph makes it the fastest creature on Earth, have previously been badly damaged by human activity.

They were persecuted in the 19th and 20th century. During World War Two they were killed to protect carrier pigeons.

Numbers also plummeted as a result of the use of certain pesticides.

THATS THE WAY LADS, KEEP IT UP. ;)

RPRA should now be putting our side now saying that 2009 is the worst we have ever known for BOP attacks, but obviously not condoning the actions on the poor Peregrines etc.

ALL I CAN SAY TO MR.MARK THOMAS IS IF YOU WOULD STOP DISTORTING THE TRUTH AND ENGAGE IN SERIOUS DIOLOUGE WITH ,THE PIGEON FANCIERS ,THE GAME BIRD FRATTERNITY,AND ALSO THE GENERAL PUBLIC WHO DONT GET THE WILD BIRDS IN THEIR GARDEN ANYMORE YOU MIGHT GET SOMEWHER.

BECAUSE ALL YOU ARE DOING IS ALLIANAETING A LOT OF YOUR PAST SUPPORTERS AND FORCING PEOPLE TO ACT ON THEIR OWN INNICIATIVE TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT.

I KNOW THEY WONT ,SO FK EM LET WHAT HAPPENS HAPPEN WHEN THEY HAVE HAD ENUFF THEN THEY WILL WANT TO TALK TO ALL CONCERNED AND THEN THOSE CONCERNED SHOULD SAY *expletive removed* OFF YOU HAD YOUR OWN WAY FOR YEARS.

TUFF sh**

they wont become involved any serious debate because of a few issues, they have for years lied about the numbers of bop and have lied about the number they release, they lie about how these released birds are trained to hunt pigeons prior to release, they will not accept they have tried to play mother nature and failed miserably. we have for years put up with watching our birds getting attacked and ripped to bits trying to get home. maybe now the shoe is on the other foot they might shift their stance but for as long as they police themselves...........i don`t think so.

Maybe once the website is up and running we should be showing photos of the mutilation these birds carry out. A photo carries a powerful impact - just a thought
