Guest Denny Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 red kite m8 Copy that m8 they are making a come back from near extinction - I've seen loads when I've driven down the M5 and saw some on the outskirts of Salisbury this winter. One was sighted only a week ago flying over fields near the A447 on the Leicester/Derby edges - you ought to have seen the twitchers out with their zoom lenses! http://www.redkites.co.uk/ for photos
Guest Denny Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 These little beauties nest every year almost at the end of my garden, a disused quarry which is now used as a national dive centre! Their nesting place less than 800m away! Over the last three years their numbers have been increasing and I've already lost four birds to them in my first year - I only started to let my YBs out until mid summer. I'm aready dreading this spring/summer's losses!
bruno1 Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 This was split from 'Bid to protect pigeons from hawks ends in fiasco' thread, off-topic, but deserving of a thread of its own.
rasbull Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 I have a pair of red kites which fly directly above my garden most days, sometimes really low. Beautiful birds to look at in the air. I live at the foot of the Brecon Beacons, and Pen Y Fan is clearly visable from my garden. However, despite where I live, have only ever had 1 weeks worth of problems with a sparrowhawk. Guess I should keep my fingers crossed it stays that way! ;-)
billt Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 This is the red kite harmless to our birds
wilkins Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 i let my birds go in training just off the A40 beconsfield i have seen 8 red kite's in the area above me when letting the birds go but i have never had a bad toss from that spot, they seem to appear after i release the birds but just glide at first i was thinking im in for a bad toss now i dont worry , if you move more into windsor the royal park can be very dodgy to toss from lovely spot to train from but have given up on it due to the sparrow hawks in the park.
clayton moore Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 Get peice of tough transparent sheet of plastic buy pigeon sticker from Boddy and rywoods Put pigeon transfer on plastic so the bird looks to be perched on fence.Hawk will hit it hey presto.Hawk funeral required.
pjc Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 i find using an upturned fishtank on the loft roof is good! Put your birds underneath, very good for settleing them and allowing a good look around.
peterpau Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 If you drive down the M40 from Banbury past Stockenchurh and through the cutting and go to Slough Maidenhead or High Wycombe area. You'll see stacks o' red kites. I counted 45 the other week. People feed 'em round Stockenchurch :-/

Be too slow to suprise, let alone catch a pigeon.
