Guest monkeynuts71 Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 for reasons beyond my control ive had my old birds on openhole the last 6 weeks without a problem, today i get to the loft 15 old birds missing,1 with no tail feathers whatsoever, 1 with half her wing feathers missing and then the bloke next door hands me a ring saying there was not much left of the bird with a sparrow hawk sat on her. so much for my first old bird season.over half my birds gone whats the point??????????????????????????????????????
Guest Davy Fleming Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Yip, You can still get done as you shouldn't have had the trap in the first place but sure you can set the same trap to catch Magpies and think if you go to the police to tell them what you are doing you probably can get away with it but stand to be corrected on the latter part of this
Guest frank dooman Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 yes thats what i was going to do catch the magpies but i would think they would have a hard time proving in court that you were going to do anything other than re-home it given that they actualy set that up with the shu to do just that i think we need to think outside the box and fight them the way they do, they have now set up a test case for fanciers to protect there birds by them actualy takeing part in the experiment they would need to prove that you actualy did harm to the bop they might just have s hit in there own nest so to speak

pigeon princess Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Yes I seen it, it only moved when I walked around to the front of the loft with my bucket and scraper my partner had a prob with one when he bred goldfinches
Blue Tooner Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Had a peregrine hit my old birds tonight,, it came from nowhere hit a pigeon but didn't manage to hold it the birds scattered everywhere,, I'm one short, a yearling hen, guess she was the one it hit :(
Guest frank dooman Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 thanks that doesnt say i cant use it, but the point iam trying to get at is the rspb set up a trial situation with the shu to trap and re-home them now we all know how some real crooks play the system and get off with stuff because they use the system against its self so why dont we, also why should any of the fanciers that were part of that trial be allowed to protect there birds and iam not that is discrimation not haveing a go davy just trying to spot/use a loop hole they gave us would be nice to here other views i know what the law says but we need to find a way round it JMO.
Guest Davy Fleming Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Not sure what you mean Frank regarding the fanciers that were part of the trial being allowed to protect there birds
Guest frank dooman Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 not haveing a go davy but we need to use anything that we can to change the law and if we had to use that we should then that would mean that if someone was succesfull we could all protect our bird thats what we all need if they have stuipdly let anyone trap them why cant i does it realy matter how we get there as long as we do
Guest frank dooman Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Not sure what you mean Frank regarding the fanciers that were part of the trial being allowed to protect there birds if they let you trap why should they be able to stop anyone else
W.D. Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 By the sounds of things it looks like the hen hawks are getting ready to go to nest going by the the amount of strikes this week. My dad got hit this week too, maybe 30 birds out flying about and you can guess the one that got hit, the only one with 2 nat positions. Luckily one of the neighbours saw it happen and ran into someones front garden to chase the hawk away.He said it had another go as the bird struggled to get back to the loft just missing it as it went in the door. The hawk had been pecking at its eye and head, so its eye has been closed since then and swollen the size of a pea, doesn't know whether it will get over it but doing what he can using golden eye ointment as its all he can get his hands on, he has some Amoxicillin capsules for humans but scared to use them incase they are too strong. This is the second hit recently, the other bird wasn't so lucky.
kirky Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 i had hawk attack yesterday first time in 3 years at loft, ybs all worked back bar one.
Guest Davy Fleming Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Hi Guys and Gals , Had a visitor today and managed to take a VERY CLOSE up photo but don't know how to get it on here as hopeless at this type of thing but just wanted to show how nice it looked close up but will get my young lad to do it when he comes in as love to share some SPECIAL moments with all my friends on the site . When it was released after getting itself jammed in the fence it just soared away high up into the sky and sure it went that high up it went to heaven and pretty sure it looked very very very very like the one that killed one of my wee babies last night so MORE THAN SURE WHEN IT GETS TO HEAVEN IT WILL THEN REST IN PEACE . what a shame as now feel so sorry for the poor wee thing so think I will have a wee cry :o ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D signed THE MASTER ;D ;D
