carl Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 can i just say i have given them barley and its the only thing left in the feeding tray, this tells me they dont like it as its the last thing they will eat. I feed a good allround mix in the winter months as much as they like everyday. Before i pair up i will knock them back for a day or three to get the weight off.

CARL MATE THE REASON THEY ARE LEAVING THE BARLEY IS YOU ARE GIVING THEM TOO MUCH FEEDING ;)
carl Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Yes alf but it does them no harm giving them what they want.I know it cost more but they are happy.I dont think there is enough in barley to get them through these cold winter months.
Guest speckled Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 ;D well Alf not much we agree on but i agree with ya there even the spelling error, i can limit for. Carl why do ya not feed barley, it one of the best corns to have in the mix all year round, its in mine .good way of getting widowhood cocks weight of them after that breeding season, but dont knock i till ya try it so thay say. just read alittle about such a small corn before ya knock its benifits,Tammy any spelling errors ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Speck :X
ACE LOFTS Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 iv got my stock hens on barley and cocks, iv had them on it for the last 3 weeks, and the hens are locked in the averiey, i will 50-50 them next week with breeding coz im breeding early. as for the race team just waiting for them to drop last flight then they will go on barley to clean them up and drop the waight off also will start letting them to fly to. when my cocks have a weeks rest in the racing season i will put them on barley for the whole week then build them up for the following week. barley is great stuff.
Roland Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Murphy use to be wheat and Barley close season ... ok was from local farms and cost effective. Only things you have to worry about barley are If they get fat, they are hell to get back in shape, and that it can and wcould cause toxins in their system if over fed... yes like most things one gets away with it for yonks, but when it hits... it hits real hard.
andy Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 BARLEY FANTASTIC DURING THE WINTER, BUT 25% IS ENOUGH..
schouwman71 Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Barley if used correctly can be a leathel weapon on sprint races, especially with young birds, and it does not do them any harm or problems which some people seem to say, they dont use it because of all the old wives tales and scare mongorers there is in the sport.

Wiley Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 schouwman71 i have to agree also its very valuablein the sprint races
birdman55678 Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 Lots of good comments on this topic, I agree that health is a key, but also I believe that good feed promotes good health. Main thing with barley is that the birds do not overeat as they don't like it. They won't get fat from no excercise in the winter.
Guest Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 The next time you come down Oregon way Ed, take some barley back with you, some of the best I've ever had, from local corn mill, very very clean and 6 bucks a bag
Tim.Farr Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 Get Ed to go down to Oregon before the Late Hatch and then drag him down here with you.
Guest Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 I'll do my best Tim, always enjoy Ed's company
birdman55678 Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 Well Linda I will definately do that, is the barley your buying barbed or is it polished? six bucks a bag is very inexpensive and I have never seen it priced that low, anyway hopefully will see ya at the Oregon state race at the latest. I might even show up at dinner time some time this summer, those steaks you fed us last year still brings wonderful dreams.. LOL. Later gal and thanks. Ed
birdman55678 Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 Tim, one of these days I will also get down there and meet you. later guys and gals. Ed 8)
Guest Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 It's barbed Ed,and u know me with pigeon feed, how particular I am, we can only get one feed here a 14% protein mix, some of the best feed I've ever had. It's always very fresh and no dust and at $11 bucks a bag a bargain. It's mixed at the local corn mill the same place that supplies the barley. The feed that was available in Washington State was some of the worst that I have ever seen, that's why we started bringing the Heritage Acres in from Canada. Our corn mill will mix anything you want, provided you supply the recipe and spend $200. I my get them to do a depurative mix next year, save us mixing it up ourselves. You know you're welcome anytime kiddo, just give us a bell
mark Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 Barley if used correctly can be a leathel weapon on sprint races, especially with young birds, and it does not do them any harm or problems which some people seem to say, they dont use it because of all the old wives tales and scare mongorers there is in the sport. thats right schouwman those top corn merchants dont want you feeding your birds barley for £3 + a bag they want you to buy the fancy mixes at £8 plus
birdman55678 Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 Linda does your "corn mill" stock a lot of feed, if I drive down there will they have like 1/2 ton of it? If I drive there I might as well pick up enough of it to last a while. Ed
Guest Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 I can order it to be delivered fresh for you if I know what day you will be here
Guest Paulo Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 what is it with barley then cause a lot of North Eastern People blokes don't like it. Is it something to do with the old UK strains weren't suited to it?
Wiley Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 but is there any uk old strains that are kept pure now begs the question?
